June 26, 1939. The Dodgers were a joke. They called 'em the Flatbush Follies, the Daffy Dodgers, and other not-so-loving-nicknames. Then they pulled some (literal) stunts and got good because of the money it brought in. They would go on to win the pennant in 1941.

Oldtimers gonna oldtime.
But other things were happening to baseball • last week besides a birthday party. In Brook-lyn, the Dodgers (original name: Trolley Dodgers and for 50 years an American joke) had a case of night fever. Led by President Larry MacPhail and Screwball Mungo (above), eccentric pitcher, the Dodgers were staging a baseball circus. On a brilliantly lighted field, jazz bands played, soldiers marched, pretty girls did tricks. A crowd of 35,000 filled the park, 20,000 more could not get in. In the midst of all the excitement, the Dodgers, who haven't finished out of the National League's second division in six years, won 20 out of 30 home games, raced up to third place in the League standings. Brooklyn fans, fanatically loyal even when the team is losing, began to dream of a Dodger pennant. At Cooperstown, the oldtimers heard about the Dodgers, night ball and the pretty girls. "Baseball has changed," they sorrowfully said.

Brooklyn had nurtured flashy teams be-fore. In 1890, the year Brooklyn joined the National League, their ball club, then known as the Bridegrooms, ran away with the pennant. At the turn of the century, under foxy Ned Hanlon, Brooklyn won the pennant twice (1899 and 1900), were promptly nicknamed the Superbas—after Hanlon's Superbas, a famed burlesque troupe of that era.

The most insane part about this article to me is that it spends 7-8 paragraphs talking about spring training innovations like hitting off of tees and a ball return system then casually drops this in at the last second.
At week's end, Rickey took his Dodgers to Miami for an exhibition game with the National League Champion Boston Braves, and broke another tradition. With Infielder Jackie Robinson and Catcher Roy Campanella in the Dodger line-up, Miami saw its first game with Negroes and whites on the same playing field. The Rickeys won, 5-2.

I was gonna say ain't it funny how words change meaning over the years but then I thought hmm wonder what Rickey looked like younger and OK YES I SEE THE VISION.

Group one was about 75ish grade schoolers eating lunch and high on getting waves from Ohtani AND Muncy. They loudly informed Tucker he would hit 50 home runs this year. He waved at them so the pact is sealed.

Group two is us Tours folk seeing “23” and going HMMMMMM.

I can't believe it! I got a guy, puts down a perfect fucking bunt, and what does he do? He can't run in the running lane! And what do you do? You do your fucking job, and you call him out! So now instead of a runner at third and one out, what do I have? I have nothing, because you made a great fucking call!" Now I start to laugh, so he waves his finger in my face and says, "You can't laugh! You can't laugh! The camera's on us! You cannot laugh!" I suppress my smile while he says, "So now I gotta come out here like a raving maniac, because my guy doesn't know the difference between running right here" - now he's pointing down at the lines showing the running lane -"to right here," like he's showing me how I blew the call. Tom finished by saying, "So now I gotta run back to the dugout and look like a freaking idiot," and off he goes.

Hump the Ump is a great name for a TV show.
Mike was living in a run-down rental house with two straight roommates, Dave and Rob. I would hang out there once in a while, they'd pass around a joint, and we would shoot the shit. Dave and Rob were baseball fans and loved my war stories. But they couldn't figure out how Mike and I were friends, or even in the same orbit. Finally, before Mike moved out, he told them we were gay and a couple. Rob, who was pleasantly stoned when hearing this new puzzle-solving information, replied, "Wait a minute, you're serious? I don't care, but really? Dude, you're humping the ump?" Classic!
