You can find a discussion that captivity effects bear thinking about and can even be used to do better science in the Terzolas Manifesto - preprint here: osf.io/preprints/os... let's start a new era of behavior research!

These behavioral changes are linked to profound changes in gene expression after as little as one month in captivity as this paper by @labdavalos.bsky.social using the same shrews shows doi.org/10.1098/rsbl...

Shrews loose their motivation for reward, which could be mistaken for cognitive impairment and run excessively, confounding the effects of the actual study about effects of brain size changes. @mpi-animalbehav.bsky.social @animaltracking.bsky.social 2/🧵

Almost all scientific research is done with lab animals. Surprisingly, there is barely any literature on how captivity may affect the results. And these effects can be profound. In shrews, remind us of depression as the paper published by @cecibaldoni.bsky.social shows doi.org/10.1098/rsos...

looking for a good scientific read? This paper is out today and shows how much energy male bats can save by living in groups. Great for buffering environmental unexpectedness! Pic by Rene J doi.org/10.1242/jeb....

Edward Hurme on #npr 🤩: tiny new tags allowed us to discover how bats ride the storm during migration 🦇💨: www.wesa.fm/.../research....

how about starting the new year with a @science.org paper? Congrats Edward Hurme and other coauthors, this makes me incredibly happy 🦇💨

loving the X-odus! Everybody join here - it's friendly, tolerant, open-armed and -minded, not owned by a horrible person and the orange desaster is absent

Congratulations Sarah, for submitting you bachelor thesis. She fought valiant battles with giant data sets and algorithms spitting out false positives and prevailed: lesser fishing bats' morning foraging is determined by reproductive state. Also our lab culture very much revolves around cake 😇

#shrew paper alert! 📣🐭
Did you know the shrews shrink their brain🧠 in winter❄️?

Our study shows unique changes in hypothalamus gene expression, related to energy regulation🔋, which helps shrews adapt to seasonal challenges 🍂

Have a look! 👀

I learned how to make reels yesterday, but they do me no good here 😆 our new book is out today on the 🦇bats🦇 of Barro Colorado Island and the research that has been done on them. But don't worry, you'll enjoy by looking at the pictures alone! get it here: geni.us/batislandglo...
