Damn. That ruling in favour of the Cowichan has racists out and frothing. It's almost like the 1867 land grab without treaties by Joseph Trutch was a bad idea with long lasting impacts or something.

The bulk of these issues are tied to affordable housing unavailability and lack of funding for mental health, health, and social programs. And I can almost guarantee that everyone complaining wants a solution that won't raise taxes or close tax loopholes. 1/2

Hey, @bcndpcaucus.bsky.social, when is BC going to take civil defense seriously in this climate change scenario we're in? We can't keep scrambling every year. We need permanent, full-time people and equipment/resources past what we have now.

Made sheet pan sliders for dinner tonight! 7.5/10 overall, need to adjust seasoning and add bacon bits.

This one might be weird to some because "Civil Defense" has basically been dead in Canada and the USA since the 1960s.

Ireland, Germany, and Singapore all have Civil Defense type organizations that we should really be copying, because the current ad-hoc approach isn't working.
I 100% agree with this. Canada needs a proper Civil Defence Corps. Organized, uniformed, trained, and equipped. I've been talking about this for ages and I'm glad it's getting more traction.

A solid opinion piece from The Vancouver Sun. BC's lack of biodiversity laws and over reliance on industry to make ethical and environmentally sound decisions is a problem we need to address to have a secure future.

Opinion: Biodiversity is the foundation of a stronger B.C. — it's time we treated it that way
Opinion: Unlike many other provinces, B.C. still has no stand-alone law that protects biodiversity.

This is brutal and entirely predictable. All studies so far indicate that most models of AI use for creative or knowledge/information processing based tasks leads to declines in capability in those areas.
This past semester was the most stressful of my academic career. I had 180 students and about half cheated at some point in the semester

They submit weekly reflections where the questions are opinion-based, graded only on effort, don't care about grammar

SO MANY students submitted ChatGPT essays
I talked to 15 teachers/professors about how AI and ChatGPT is ruining their lives:

Watching Alberta flushing itself down the toilet for corporate oil profits that they'll never see and hearing people here in BC talk like we need to be more like Alberta is disheartening. The UCP are a rolling disaster but I guess it's all cool as long as oil companies make bank.

Sahara (1943) and its later made-for-TV remake in 1995 have almost been forgotten, which is too bad. The former is rock solid and the latter was surprisingly decemt, and they're rare tank-centric films.
