This past semester was the most stressful of my academic career. I had 180 students and about half cheated at some point in the semester

They submit weekly reflections where the questions are opinion-based, graded only on effort, don't care about grammar

It's good to see them protesting. UIC students don't always protest things they should, and they don't protest as much as I've seen from students at other schools I've taught at. Still being largely a commuter school probably plays a role in that. Plus, post-COVID lack of community

Oh, it's absolutely a threat. UIC has been pretty vocal about not letting ICE on campus. But if abductions like this keep happening, I do wonder how long students will keep showing up.

Generally, when legitimate candidates for the Nobel Peace Prize lose, entire countries don't have to worry about revenge

They also aren't usually trolled so hard:

Not only did Trump not win, he lost to María Corina Machado, the opposition leader who is living in hiding while resisting the authoritarian head of Venezuela. A country who's fishing boats Trump likes to not-very-peacefully bomb in attempts to start a new war, killing at least 21 civillians so far

At least 10 ICE agents - most masked and wearing technical/bullet proof vests - swarm a blue car in front of an elementary school in the West Loop of Chicago on October 8th. They violently drag a screaming woman in a hot pink long-sleeved top and gray sweat pants from the car.

"In front of the West Loop elementary school I work at.... my Uber had just passed by the line where parents pick up their kids and it just looked like cars so I didn't think anything of it. So I wouldn't have even known what was happening if I hadn't heard kids from the school yelling "ITS ICE!" and running away scared. I got out the Uber and was the only person to get a video so I'm posting this to raise attention and add to the multitude of videos demanding justice for these victims. NO WAY they're doing this in front of a school and right at the time where school lets out. I thought they were parents of the school but were not I don't know what to say and have zero coherent thoughts right now. Please pray or do what you can. #abolishice #ice #deportations #iceawareness"

Communities have more power than they think

Research on Walmart found that they avoided opening in towns where there were protests (Ingram, Yue, & Rao, 2010). And goldmines with community opposition are worth less (Henisz, Dorobantu, & Nartey, 2014)

I think the governors and mayors are trying to avoid having law enforcement arrest ICE agents because that seems like a pretty quick path to the insurrection act and martial law, perhaps even civil war. It seems like Trump is trying to call their bluff and instigate violence
