Question for plant people. What is the function of the webby material on some Centaurea sp? Is it meant to trap and kill crawling bugs?

I’ve got aphids thriving on this thing, meanwhile I’ve found six minute pirate bugs dead and trapped in fuzz 🙃

A nice margined calligrapher fly from my last bug observation outing. One of my favorites to take pictures of since they’re usually quite tolerant of my phone hovering over them. Getting over a cold and hoping I’ll feel better enough tomorrow to go out again!

Had the realization today that “eat the crust! It’s the most nutritious part!” was just a white lie parents said so kids would eat the whole piece of bread. How can it be the most nutritious part if bread starts as a homogenous ball of dough..?

We are zoomed in on four bright orange “cups”, each with a dark margin that appears to have small, eyelash like hairs, hence the name. The cups are jelly like in texture and not perfectly round. Zoomed a little further out, we see another cluster of eyelash cups to the right of the photo, surrounded by bits of blurry lichen. On these tye dark margin is thicker and the eyelash structures are a little less prominent

Used my free will to feed some pigeons. I wanted to feed them healthy stuff so I bought some bird treats (oat groats?) from a pet store. Sprinkled them in a grassy area with some pigeons. A few came up, pecked around, and then looked at me as if to say “wtf, don’t you have any salty bread??” 😅

New-to-me garden visitor. A very tiny lady beetle found on the leaf of a thistle with a lot of aphid activity. #inaturalist suggested the genus psyllobora. Maybe Psyllobora vigintimaculata? If so that would be pretty cool!

A calligrapher fly resting on a green stem. He is a mimic and looks kind of like a bee with yellow stripes and two big compound eyes on top of his head. He gets his name from the pattern on his abdomen which looks like bit like a calligraphers pen nib in the center. Two flies, either fighting or in courtship. Or maybe just saying hello to each other? They have six dainty pale legs, a dark cylindrical abdomen, big red compound eyes, and elongated oval wings with a black and white stripe pattern. They are standing on top of a tombstone, and we are zoomed in so we can see faint individual crystals in the stone. A light green flatid plant hopper clinging to a stick. As the name suggests, he is flat and we are looking at him from the side. He is also mimicking a leaf or a green thorn perhaps, with his whole body the same uniform green color. His little eye with a tiny black dot at the center looks suspiciously at the camera, hoping I am not a bird who has seen through his clever disguise. An Eastern eyed click beetle, a beloved native to my area, is seen with its rear end tucked under the bark of a felled log it is resting on. She is depositing eggs. Her body has two main sections, black and covered in a mottled white pattern. On the upper half, she has two beautiful large black circles to trick predators into thinking they are seeing two big eyes. Despite looking a little scary, this species is docile and will play dead if you pick it up.

If you’re doomscrolling political turmoil and feeling helpless, I just wanna say it’s never a bad time to find something you’d like to volunteer for. I volunteered today at my local park pulling invasive plants. It might not be a big thing, but it felt good to be out doing something productive!

#fungifriends, it’s cold today so I spent some time making a list for myself of crust fungi I might find tomorrow. I wanted to share since it’s never occurred to me to do this.. and it’s way easier to access and carry around than carrying my reference book! Hope this idea helps someone else too :)
A screen shot of a list from the apple reminders app. I made each species I hope to find a list item, and added its habitat and characteristics in the notes, as well as a sample picture of what the species could look like. I sometimes end up just wandering around the green space when I go out looking for fungi to make entries for on INaturalist, so I hoping this list will help me stay on track!

#Fungifriends, Can I pls see pictures of fungi you took at a national park out west? I’ve never been to any and with the way things are going, scared I may never get to see. Here are some of my favorite fungi finds from the eastern coast in exchange ❤️
A gymnopilus species growing out of a crevasse in rotting wood. The fruiting bodies are large and pale orange, stacked on top of each other. The caps kind of look like soft big burger buns on top. A mycena species (maybe? Could be wrong) photographed a few years ago in Pennsylvania. The mushrooms and slim, bright white, and appear to be marching up a moss covered log. Lentinus arcularius. This small tan and white mushroom has pores instead of gills, and is called the spring mushroom because it comes out in early spring. These were hidden in the grass on a small stick. Cerioporus squamosus, also called pheasant back, also called dryads saddle, lined up and growing out of a stump somewhere in Pennsylvania. They get their common names from the shape, and the pattern that looks a bit like a pheasants feathers. They’re also edible, though in my personal opinion not very tasty. They both smell and taste like watermelon rind! They’re a great beginner mushroom for foraging because of their distinct pattern, shape and smell. (Obligatory note: never eat something you’re not 100% confident identifying and never eat them raw)
