also Alexander the Great, which was excellent in a very different way.

yes! she co-taught one of my favorite classes there, The Art of Prediction.

😔 sorry to hear that

significantly more than that, LHS sent 107 students to Harvard alone from 2009-2024 according to this interactives.thecrimson.com/2024/news/fe...

also the lack of self-awareness of whoever at TPUSA thought they could gin this into a free speech crisis when it's pretty obvious the TAs' comments were extremely patient, thorough, and dare I say helpful given the circumstances

maybe I'm being unfair because I have more or less always gotten compliments on my writing. I think it's mostly the lack of self-awareness here that I find surprising, like you're gonna write something like this and complain when you get a zero? How much effort did she put in?

I mean I do think it's good but it doesn't have the reputation of e.g. the Philipses, Hotchkiss, and so forth. It tends to be more of a feeder to small liberal arts colleges than Ivies. which are good schools, don't get me wrong. But so so many Lexington parents want Harvard or Yale or Princeton.

CSW only offered 2 APs while I was attending (Calculus AB + BC) and then later dropped the AP cert (without changing the material, iirc) shortly after I left because they had people taking it just so they would have an AP class on their record.

It's honestly probably more rigorous than CSW if that's your priority, it's hard work and succeeding in AP classes there can be a leg up in getting into highly selective schools, or so I hear. Their extracurriculars are also great, the FIRST FTC team is consistently great even at nationals.

LHS is a really great school and I think (well, hope) that kids there today are even more accepting and less judgmental of difference than my peers were.
November 30, 2025 at 2:04 AM
there was also at least when I went there also just a significantly higher percentage of LGBTQ+ students than in the general population, i think it has long been a bit of a haven for people who could afford it.

it was also felt so much safer to be queer and questioning there than at LHS, albeit this was like over ten years ago now. but yeah, CSW played no small part in making me the kind of person I am today, shaped my values quite greatly, showed me it was ok to be trans, etc.

Honestly I have a very hard time reconciling my opinions on the importance of public education with how much I fucking loved that school and all the teachers I had there.
November 30, 2025 at 1:52 AM
oh it was fucking BRILLIANT for me, so much reading and writing and exposure to stuff I wouldn't have otherwise read until college if at all (Harlem Renaissance, queer theory, Melville, Homer, Marx, Hegel, Foucault…)
November 30, 2025 at 1:52 AM
yeah sounds about right

funnily enough, did not do any drugs in high school at all. it was certainly in the air though. lots of (quite talented!) artsy kids.
November 30, 2025 at 1:49 AM
teacher who gave me that comment was definitely at CSW, I'm not sure a public school teacher would have been brave enough, and I can't really blame them.

I grew up in Lexington and took my SATs at Belmont High. high school was 1yr LHS/3yr CSW (private) though.
