One thing we do as adults that puzzles me: we want children to know that Christmas isn’t just about gifts but some will go into debt to provide many lavish Christmas gifts for their kids, who grow up to perpetuate the cycle. Why do we do that? Why can’t the kids get gifts all year long and Christmas just be about gathering, eating, and singing as a family or group of good friends? Why do we tie ourselves to “traditions” that even scholars can’t agree on how they were begun and for what reason? Winter Solstice has always be a celebratory phase in almost every culture since the dawn of man. Each culture has a period of celebration to mark leaving the short and dark days behind and embracing the longer and brighter days ahead. As we walk into 2026, let us consider what darkness we can leave behind and what brightness we can embrace going forward. We are light.
