Even ”closed” primaries are barely that. In Florida, as long as you update your registration in advance you can vote in whichever primary you wish. Nobody in the actual parties has any control over that.

Reagan also followed a typical path to the presidency through a governorship. As far as I’m aware, Trump is unique in having no government experience prior to the presidency.

He’s not a guaranteed swing vote anymore. If the other 5 conservatives want to be aggressive he’s incentivized to vote with them to maintain some influence.

At some point, wanting to retake lost territory switches from justified righting of a historical wrong to unjustified nationalist nonsense. I don't know exactly where that threshold is, but Ukraine regaining Crimea is pretty clearly on the right side of it.

The powerful have always been in danger of that kind of epistemic degeneration though. Yes men are a perennial problem. AI will exacerbate it, but it was already present. For the average person it’s a much more novel issue.
