🚨New publication out in @reggovjournal.bsky.social

@danielk24.bsky.social & I show that the support for green subsidies by unions & business interest groups in the 🇺🇸 & in 🇩🇪 goes hand in hand with the support for eco-social policies.

💡To sum up💡

Research so far has overlooked the role of subsidies in ensuring broad-based support for eco-social policy from both unions & employer associations.

We show that green subsidies tend to reduce opposition, & increase support for eco-social policy.
benediktbender.bsky.social
Can the IRA’s green subsidies ensure its political survival under Trump?

We believe that green subsidies may very well prove resilient in the long run, thanks to business, labor, Democratic, & moderate Republican support.
benediktbender.bsky.social
USA: we also show support for green subsidies among American business organizations & trade unions. Business groups see innovation & green tech gains; unions support them as subsidies are tied to pro-labor standards (positive-sum effect).
benediktbender.bsky.social
🚨 Important for our other argument is that the unions support green subsidies because they are only paid to companies in which collective agreements or other forms of union representation are in place (positive-sum).
benediktbender.bsky.social
In Germany: as we had expected green subsidies play an important role in increasing the support of eco-social policy reforms.

All of the most representative business associations & trade unions agree that green subsidies should be used to manage the transformation process.
benediktbender.bsky.social
We focused on the most important trade unions & business organizations in 🇩🇪 & the 🇺🇸.

We collected 93 documents (press releases, minutes of public meetings, & information from web pages) and additionally, we used 15 interviews with organization representatives and with experts on the IRA.
benediktbender.bsky.social
💡In short💡

We believe that the organizations that benefit from a particular green subsidy will be much more likely to support eco-social policy.
benediktbender.bsky.social
We argue that green subsidies facilitate support for eco-social policies by transforming a zero-sum game of risks, costs, & distributional conflict into a mutually beneficial, positive sum game of benefits for both unions & businesses.
benediktbender.bsky.social
While the literature on eco-social policies has grown, limited attention has been paid to subsidies and how they are connected to different eco-social policies.

🚨New publication🚨

How do organised interests shape welfare state reforms? In this chapter, we review various political economy approaches to explaining ongoing reforms. We also discuss the challenges of member mobilisation & political influence in times of multiple crises.

Back from my summer break & excited to share my new publication 🎉

What does methodological quality mean for qualitative & quantitative research? We review debates, highlight skepticism & possibilities, and call for a differentiated approach.

Many thanks to @leburn.bsky.social & Claudius Wagemann

I have a new paper out in @wepsocial.bsky.social: www.tandfonline.com/doi/full/10....
The paper situates discussions about the Educational Cleavage in a longer temporal context (back to the Medieval time) to show that there have ALWAYS been conflicts between educational groups. (1/3)
