Maps like this suck. They imply climate change will flood vast swathes of the country very soon. Climate change will (and does) cause more flooding, but flooding is not about whether land is below high tide...

I don't think "are we English or British" is a salient issue and I think it doesn't make sense for progressives to enter that debate and thereby raise its salience. Reform can say "they're killing what it means to be English" and most people would be like *shrug*
benjgeo.bsky.social
But again I question why we need it. Let them have "English identity". Who needs it?

You may only call it a peak or a plateau after a period of sustained change in that direction that is 2x longer than the last 'false start'

Why didn't Chinese fossil CO2 emissions peak in 2013?

It looked like Chinese emissions might peak in 2013, after declines in 2014 & 2015, but since then, improvements in the CO2 efficiency of the economy slowed significantly.

CO2 will peak if efficiency improvements return.

See ALT text.

The figure is a simplified Kaya Identity. The bars are the contributions to growth from GDP, Energy/GDP, CO2/Energy, and when you add the bars together you get the black dot, CO2 growth. For a given GDP, if the improvements in Energy/GDP and CO2/Energy are greater than the GDP growth, then emissions go down.

Over the next few days we will be posting our demands into 4 overarching demands/group
Today Demand 0 - A party for everyone
Demand Number zero: A Party For Everyone. Require all elected party representatives to be bound by the programme democratically agreed by the membership, which will have trans liberation at its core.

Ensure that elected representatives are held accountable to the membership and censure and remove any representatives who break from this programme (including promoting transphobic bigotry or discrimination). Create a transparent disciplinary process for all members to prevent bigotry and discrimination, overseen by a democratically-elected committee including representation for trans people. This should be guided by the principles of transformative justice, with efforts to resolve issues through mediation and education where possible.

Don't feel bad for Billy getting dragged on here. He's been on this bus for a long time, he's heard the criticisms, he's seen the approach fail, and he's doubling down anyway. He deserves to be dragged. www.theguardian.com/uk/2008/apr/...
Let's celebrate what it means to be English
A mixture of greater confidence in Scotland and the recent influx of immigrants has put the English identity back on the agenda

Identities aren't transhistorical things, they're constructed for purposes and need to be actively maintained to carry on existing. The only purpose of "English Identity" is racism. Therefore maintaining its existence is bad.

We don't need it. I don't even know what the Oxfordshire County flag is.

…and we keep going, because this is our duty and our promise. We formed this giving circle with seven friends to ensure dependable, weekly support—for survival needs. As those needs become daily, we escalate.

24 hours left ⚠️ Food, tents, blankets, medicine, ASAP. 0/500: chuffed.org/project/hope...
A square white graphic. On the left is a stylized ink illustration of a kestrel falcon in black on white, without outline just the black marks on its wings and face, drawn from behind. His wings are partly open and his head is turned to the right. In his beak is an anemone poppy in red ink with a green stem. On the right is the title "Keep hope alive: a gaza giving circle" in ink-effect font. The text says "We are a team of volunteers in the US and UK helping our friends on the ground keep their families and neighbors alive with food, water, & shelter. We distribute your contributions equally every week for sustainable support." In the bottom right corner in green text is the link https://tinyurl.com/HopeGivingCircle.

Another Mamdani position I can’t abide. They’re starting to stack up
Clarification from the current New York candidate on his stance on le regimes in Cuba and Venezuela
le episode highlighted that just days after the interview, Mamdani's campaign arified its position by stating that both Nicolás Maduro and Miguel Díaz-Canel were "dictators."
"I want to be clear about my position. I believe both Nicolás Maduro and Miguel Díaz-Canel are dictators. Their administrations have stifled free and fair elections, imprisoned political opponents, and suppressed a free and fair press," Mamdani emphasized.

We are the Trans Liberation Group and we are fighting for a foundation of trans liberation in Your Party, in its current and future iterations.
Founding Statement:
The situation for trans people in Britain is critical. We face a barrage of billionaire bankrolled abuse in the media. We endure decades long waiting lists to access limited healthcare, with dehumanisation and pathologisation built in to the system.

In the job market, we are met with discrimination, lack of opportunity and stagnating pay. We are excluded from housing, healthcare, employment, leisure - now even our use of bathrooms is policed.
 - Trans Liberation Group Something must change.
- Trans Liberation Group Founding Statement:
For trans people, today’s politics is exhausting. The major political parties have used and discarded us time and time again. Too often, exclusionary figures are embedded in leadership capacities, and even in progressive parties, those on the fringes can spew hatred unchallenged.

We say no more. This cannot happen in Your Party. The liberation of all marginalised people can only be achieved through their active and equal participation in class struggle; there can only be a precarious freedom for some under current conditions.
- Trans Liberation Group ounding Statement:
We are the Trans Liberation Group and we are fighting to ensure Your Party, in its current and future iterations, explicitly advocates for trans liberation, and encourages the political participation of trans people.

We know there are prominent figures who have been platformed under the banner of Your Party who hold regressive, misinformed and dangerous views on trans people. We are here to show them that this is our party, and we will fight tooth and nail to prevent this oppressive
politics from taking root.

Special kind of evil this
The longer answer is that the state of Israel is more than four decades older than I am and is home to about 10mn people, 7mn of them Jewish. I understand and respect why some Jews hope for a binational state or a confederation, but at this point, to be “anti-Zionist” in practice is either to be in favour of time travel or an unimaginable atrocity.

Did she think she was cooking with this or...?
If you’re enjoying any of this, in a how-the-mighty-are-fallen way, in a serves-them-right-for-austerity way, that is understandable – but absolutely bananas. You don’t even have to look at the US to know this, nor read Daniel Ziblatt’s seminal 2017 book, Conservative Parties and the Birth of Democracy: every one of your synapses is screaming it. The mainstream right is the essential firewall against the far right.

idc about the headline but the seating arrangement on these talk shows is really gross it looks like they're trying to get the women to accidentally flash the audience.
