everyone is way overcomplicating this. the exponent (little number) tells you how many of the big number to multiply together. 2³ is 2x2x2, 2² is 2x2, 2¹ is just 2. 2⁰ means theres no 2s to multiply so we get 1. every time we count down the exponent we divide by 2. 2¹÷2 = 2⁰ = 2÷2 = 1
