Based in Bergen (Norway), the Bergen Telemetry Network track aquatic animals using primarily acoustic telemetry. From southern Norway to the high Arctic in Svalbard! We track salmonids, cod fish, lobster, and cartilaginous fish. www.bergentelemetry.com

Amazing Friday out on the fjord - 8 Atlantic cod tagged! 🐟☀️ With sediment dumping and hydropower changes planned in the area, we’re collecting crucial before data to see how cod behaviour and habitat use shift as the fjord environment changes.

We've been out popping up acoustic release receivers for fine-scale positioning of thornback rays in our beautiful fjords. Several million detections to work with over the past year! Read more here: www.bergentelemetry.com/post/a-year-...

PhD candidate Jessica Robichaud at Cooke lab at @carleton.ca is visiting us for a month to help with field work. Today, she presented her work for our lab. She is using acoustic telemetry to track permit in the Florida keys! So interesting to see some of her findings! 🐟

After the workshop, Saron and Erlend also joined fieldwork with the Lennox lab at Dalhousie University, including tracking work with turtles, mackerel, and smolts. Read more about their stay here:

Before summer, PhD students Saron Berhe & Erlend M Hanssen joined the 20th anniversary NoWPaS workshop in Halifax. Five days of talks, networking & exploring Halifax with early-career salmonid researchers from around the world. They also both presented their PhD projects🐟🦦 @nowpas.bsky.social

What a week it’s been! I’ve visited @lottepohl.bsky.social & David Casals at @vliz.be in Belgium for our #EMFish project. My first time seeing and tagging a Mustelus asterias - so cool! Thanks for a very fun day on the North Sea!

Today is International Shark Day!

Sharks are over 550 species that come in many shapes and sizes, from the minuscule 20 cm long dwarf lanternshark to the almost 100 times longer whale shark. Amazing! (but not a surprise, which was ruined by their names).

We are now starting the second part of the #NFR_HITLICE project on Senja, Northern Norway, where we infect migrating salmon smolts with salmon lice and tag them with acoustic transmitters with predation sensors to investigate the vulnerability to predation 🐟
bergentelemetry.bsky.social
We've installed a PIT antenna in Nidelva to track returning Atlantic salmon smolts tagged last year through our #NFR_HITLice project. Smolts were infested with sea lice before release. Low discharge makes drilling the antenna to the riverbed easier, still a river with 3–4°C makes it quite tough!

Interested in predation? Our #NFR_RePress project investigates the reemerging conflicts between European Otter and Atlantic salmon in Norway. Go check out our webpage for an update of the development of the project:

The role of habitat in predator–prey dynamics with applications to restoration
Habitat is a powerful force in ecosystems, and the quantity and quality of habitat can shape ecosystem structure and function. Among the many important roles that habitat plays is as a mediator of ec...
