Last year's nearly 40% cut to tenant services decimated access to legal aid and eliminated educational and support services for thousands of renters. Eviction filings are at record highs, labor costs continue to rise, and the ten organizations tenant services are stretched far beyond capacity.

Tell Rob Saka and the other councilmembers to ACTUALLY show up for renters!

Today's your chance to get your photo taken with the famous puppets of @theseattlechannel.bsky.social! Seattle Solidarity Budget will be hosting a photo booth at City Hall at about 4pm ahead of the 5pm budget hearing!
A handmade puppet display shows six sock puppets styled as Seattle City Councilmembers, seated behind a wooden bench-like structure. Each puppet has a nameplate in front of it. From left to right: “Kettle, District 7” with a white sock puppet wearing a blue tie and pink knitted hat; “Rivera, District 4” with a puppet that has long dark yarn hair and a red mouth; “Nelson, Position 9” with a green puppet with long blond yarn hair and patterned dress; “Saka, District 1” is has a label but is notably missing; “Strauss, District 6” is a pink worm puppet with big blue eyes and curly brown yarn hair; and “Juarez, District 5” is a gray puppet with glasses, pearl earrings, gray hair, and a black-and-white patterned dress, frowning. The display is set outdoors against a textured wall.

Last year Harrell cut the City's tenant services by 40%, and those cuts remain in this new proposed budget. While I'm happy to see more rental assistance, tenant services are important to fully fund, especially with more than 50% of the city being renters.

This kind of rhetoric sure hits differently during Trump's second administration, something these councilmembers don't appear particularly attuned to. Saying you'll fight against the Trump administration while attacking the equitable development initiative is some real cognitive dissonance.

Starting another day of budget hearings, Seattle Councilmember Maritza Rivera, who tried to kill the city's Equitable Development Initiative last year, suggests that the program is failing to complete projects while embracing "ideology."

Mayor Harrell released his proposed budget today. This budget maintains the same level of funding for tenant services as last year, a 40% cut from 2024, despite evictions reaching record highs.

As part of Solidarity Budget's values of collective care and shared responsibility, we expect that all event participants who are able to mask will do so whenever in close proximity to other participants, especially when engaging in the tabling and discussion portions of the event.

Join us Wed. for an evening of fun, food, & community with Seattle Solidarity Budget! A City's budget is reflective of its values. Last week, City Council voted to invest millions on dangerous surveillance. What could Seattle look like if the City invested in the things we need in order to thrive?
A whimsical soft green and red wavy checkerboard background with the Solidarity Budget logo at the top center. Text underneath reads: Join us from 5-8 pm on Wednesday September 17th at Jefferson Park picnic shelter #3 for our Roundtable 2025 event. One part strategic planning, one part community building, and one-part kick off of the budget season. Four floating white rounded shapes on both sides of the main text contain short statements in red text emphasizing aspects of the event: “Food!” “Family Friendly!” “We Keep Us Safe!” and “Lovely Humans!” smaller green text toward the bottom of the slide gives accessibility information and reads: Bus #36 arrives every 10 min (1 transfer from the light rail). Outdoor event with cover & chairs. ADA accessible bathroom available. High quality masks (KN95+) will be provided and are strongly encouraged when not eating/drinking*. A light border with curved edges goes around the entire post with the address www.seattlesolidaritybudget.com overlapping the border at the bottom center.

The Seattle City Council will be voting on expanding mass surveillance on Tue. 9/9 at 2pm. The Seattle Renters' Commission urges the council to reject this expansion and protect renters’ privacy, autonomy, and safety.

See the full statement from the Commission here: www.seattle.gov/documents/Bo...
The Seattle Renters' Commission opposes the expansion of mass surveillance.

SPD has placed cameras in areas with apartments but not in areas with single family homes. Their plan would expand their CCTV network and Real-Time Crime Center and accept live video from apartment buildings.

Surveillance doesn’t reduce violent crime but has a long history of harming communities, especially Black, Indigenous, and other people of color; immigrants; LGBTQIA+ residents; people with disabilities; and low-income households.

We urge the Seattle City Council to reject CB 121052 and CB 121053 and protect renters’ privacy, autonomy, and safety.

Mayor Harrell and the Seattle City Council defunded tenant services by 40% last year. We're barely hanging on by a thread, and as Kasey Burton from Tenant Law Center said about renters seeking legal assistance, "the need is bottomless."

WA promised tenants lawyers. Why are so many facing eviction alone?

Washington became the first state to guarantee attorneys for tenants facing eviction. But a surging number of cases threatens to undermine that promise.

Even Sound Transit knows it's BS to have a gigantic effectively-private golf course served by *two* light rail stations. We should do what they printed and change "Jackson" Golf Course to be the Thornton Creek Natural Area Park, with uses everyone can enjoy.

Tax exemptions are not neutral, despite the way this council just passed them with virtually no discussion, and only a week after they were proposed. It's disingenuous to pretend they are, while simultaneously carping that a tax increase to offset those cuts should require weeks of discusison.

I'm sure others have reacted to this op/ed before me. But here's my 2 cents. There is no inhumanly monstrous substance that "robs you of your ability to help yourself," necessitating forced intervention for everyone who uses it. That's a myth. www.seattletimes.com/opinion/seat...
Here's what I learned about addiction at 12th and Jackson | Op-Ed
Leaving people too impaired to make rational judgements about their own well-being is not compassion; it is neglect. A City Council proposal could help.
