Early 19th century grapeshot, found at Barrack Park #Bexhill and very kindly donated by the Smyth family. Grapeshot was essentially small canon balls fired together to create a shotgun-like effect.
The grapeshot is a corroded brown coloured globe. It is displayed on a white label which says what I said in the main body of the post. It is against a black background. In the bottom right corner of the photograph are examples of musket shot from the Battle of Waterloo. On the left is the British one and on the right the French.

Today my @nytimes.com colleagues and I are launching a new series called Lost Science. We interview US scientists who can no longer discover something new about our world, thanks to this year‘s cuts. Here is my first interview with a scientist who studied bees and fires. Gift link: nyti.ms/3IWXbiE

You are now entering the twilight zone…

…not really…or really? No it’s in fact the topper most part of the Great Hall.

It’s not often these timbers get seen so we’re giving them some well deserved attention today. 👏
We are looking at a black and white photo of the very top of the Great Hall roof. It is a series of triangles heading off into the distance creating a puzzling pattern.

The scales cover their body and form living armour that can withstand a lion’s bite. When threatened, it'll roll into a tight ball and release a foul spray from a gland near the tail.

If you could adopt one pangolin feature, would you choose the armour, the tongue, or the roll into a ball defence?
Side view of the full pangolin mount on an oval wooden base with an enlarged background detail of the engraved plaque behind it. The specimen’s scaled body and long snout are visible, with yellowed claws resting on the base. The engraved text on the wood reads: “THE SHORT TAILED PANGOLIN. MANIS PINTADAC YLA. (CUVIER.) CENTRAL INDIA.”

What do you get when you combine traditional Mi’kmaw quill work with furniture-making techniques of the 1800s? A triumph in design that became all the rage in Victorian Nova Scotia.
The chair has a dark, reddish-brown stained wood frame with turned legs and a carved, scalloped crest rail supported by small spindles. The key feature is the decorative splint-woven back panel and woven seat.

The tall, rectangular back panel is filled with woven materials decorated with porcupine quills, dyed fibers, or fabric appliques in a vibrant, complex geometric design. The pattern features a large central eight-pointed star or rosette in light brown, red, blue, and black, surrounded by bold wedges and checkerboard patterns in white, red, black, and gold/tan.
