Jets have no future cap challenges, so they should be able to retain without running into any cap issues in the foreseeable future. What they need more than anything is some future assets that they can bank or move for younger talent.

Jets would probably have to retain some salary on Nyquist and perhaps Nino at this point. Schenn might be tradeable without retention as some team will want a physical, vet RHD. I wonder if some of the playoff "debutante" teams might look for veteran depth. Most have ample cap space.

I'm hoping that these press box stints are indications that the Jets will be very open to trading players like Nino, Schenn and Nyquist. I doubt they'd trade Namestnikov or Iafallo at this point.

Meanwhile, it seems that there are some systematic issues with xG estimates. Looking at this chart, all xG estimates look too high, and other than the extremes there is very little correlation between xG and G.

That was an awful goaltending performance, and it's hard to imagine the Jets making a serious run unless they run Hellebuyck much harder than is prudent (reminder he had one surgery a few months ago).

The extra face-off or two that Trochek wins is going to be worth it, just you wait and see (😉). The probability that a "colour commentator" points to a face-off win as justification for Trochek's selection is higher than 0.50.
January 2, 2026 at 5:12 PM
If you have a chance to put Vince Trochek on your roster instead of Jason Robertson, you've just gotta go for the face-off specialist. Right?

The Jets' success last season was based substantially on consistent adherence to a system based on speed, pressure and structure. Replacements eroded all three dimensions of their successful system. Lack of finishing is also partly related to lack of creation of rush offense and activation of D.
January 1, 2026 at 6:55 PM
I think the Jets' management didn't really understand how finely balanced their success was last year based on a roster that meshed well in terms of complementary skills, etc. I think there was naivety in thinking they could replace lost players "by committee". I raised the alarm last summer, fwiw.

It's a good illustration of three things: 1) NHL parity. Very few "easy wins"; 2) Game outcome sensitivity to seemingly small changes in saving/finishing and sequencing; 3) Roster construction dynamics (a big downgrade in just 2-3 players affects multiple lines and D pairs).

Jets had good shot metrics last season... 6th in EV xG +/- per 60 (according to @evolvingwild.evolving-hockey.com )

They were a very good team with excellent goaltending last season.

Lots of politics in the roster process. Scheifele has been clearly better than a few of those forwards. He absolutely carries the Jets & did so in the 2024/25 President's trophy season. Armstrong respected him enough to go full goon against him in the playoffs but lacks the fortitude to select him.
December 31, 2025 at 7:00 PM
Absolutely no doubt about that.
December 31, 2025 at 6:54 PM
If they ever do call up Duehr, I don't expect Arniel to put him into the middle-6. As you note, he's very hierarchical and stubborn. It took him 30+ games to figure out that Barron deserved a shot above the 4th line, even after his strong showing last season.
December 31, 2025 at 6:53 PM
They would have substantial enough trade value, but I doubt the Jets will dig that deep for trades unless it's part of a blockbuster. If they engage in TSL sales, I think it will be Schenn, Miller, and maybe Nyquist and Pearson. I just don't think Pearson or Nyquist have any real trade value.
December 31, 2025 at 6:39 PM
Scheifele carries a huge weight on a very thin forward group. I think he deserved a spot over Cirelli and Horvat, for sure. Not sure what else he could have done. He's truly one of the best playmakers in the NHL.
December 31, 2025 at 6:36 PM
It's exactly what the Jets need on that Lowry line. With Barron and Duehr on the wings, that line could be a bear to play against.
December 31, 2025 at 6:33 PM
That's also why I think Duehr could fit well on RW with Lowry and Barron. It would give them a ton of speed and size and a RS winger to facilitate zone exits and transition. Teams are pinching down hard along the boards and it's limited Jets clean exits and transition.
December 31, 2025 at 6:26 PM
The split between Appleton and the Jets seems to have been bad for both parties. The Jets haven't found a suitable replacement for Lowry's RW, and Appleton seems to have lost his mojo.
December 31, 2025 at 4:48 PM
For all the back and forth regarding Scheifele's value over the years, I think he's been a legitimate top-end C over the past 2-3 seasons. On a team that has had no depth at C he's carried the mail facing top opponents every game. He's become underrated, IMO.

The Jets certainly have the future assets in picks and prospects to add a player or two to this roster. But would Chevy seriously contemplate doubling down on this season with this roster? If not, he must take decisive actions in the other direction to get a hard and effective reboot.
December 30, 2025 at 8:29 PM
I agree with all of this. However, I do wonder whether the Jets have just enough to crawl into a wild-card spot. It would be fascinating to know whether Chevy would see that as a success, or whether he'd actually prefer a steeper drop and reset with a top-5 pick instead.
