If you give in to blackmail, the blackmailer is likely to come back demanding more.

That's a misnomer, an old one, but nonetheless a misnomer.
November 10, 2025 at 5:02 AM
That's a Wapiti.

Hence the requirement for Latin names to sort out the issue once and for all. Elk was still the long established common name though.

With Reindeer and Caribou it's not as clear cut as there are several species/sub-species. There is only one Elk species.

Because the people who did so were most likely not particularly bright.

Definitely an Elk, Moose is a misnomer in English.
November 8, 2025 at 8:01 PM
Elk.
November 8, 2025 at 7:40 PM
Nope, Elk.
November 8, 2025 at 7:20 PM
It's an Elk and it's been an Elk since before Columbus was a semen never mind a seaman. Moose is a misnomer in English.
November 8, 2025 at 7:19 PM
Nope it's an Elk.
November 8, 2025 at 7:10 PM
Nope it's an Elk.
November 8, 2025 at 7:06 PM
Cervus canadensis isn't native to Europe so there is no traditional name. We tend to refer to them as wapiti as is more fitting. If someone saw a cat in America a couple of hundred years back and called it a dog would it be correct to call cats dogs now?
November 8, 2025 at 7:06 PM
Nope, Elk.

We had to get rid of our religious fanatics somehow. Even the Dutch didn't want to take them. And as has often been the case those who take religion too seriously tend not to do too well at the sciences, biology in particular.

Alces alces has been known as elk for longer than either the US or Canada existed as nations. It's an elk.
November 8, 2025 at 6:54 PM
Nope it's an elk
November 8, 2025 at 6:49 PM
A European who probably didn't know his a**s from his elbow, seeing as elk (Alces alces) were and remain native to much of Europe. Apart from that you have repeated what I said and we agree that Moose is a misnomer in English.
November 8, 2025 at 6:44 PM
What you call Moose is Alces alces what has been known as Elk since long before Columbus was a twinkle in his dad's eye is Alces alces, they are the same species. I have nothing to brush up on, I'll await your light bulb moment.
November 8, 2025 at 6:13 PM
As we are currently communicating in English the name for Alces alces is elk.
November 8, 2025 at 6:02 PM
Elk and what you call Moose are the same species! The same animal. The religious loonies we banished to the colonies were not particularly bright and named the first large deer (wapiti) that they saw elk. This created a problem when they encountered real elk, so they used the local name for them.
November 8, 2025 at 6:00 PM
Wapiti is as you state the Native American name for Cervus Canadiensis, a North American deer species not found naturally in Europe. What you, incorrectly referred to as Moose & what has been called elk (or variations thereof) in Europe for centuries is Alces Alces, same species Elk trumps Moose
November 8, 2025 at 5:32 PM
You mean elk and wapiti? Elk have been called elk long before Europeans settled in North America.
