👋🏽 it's Latino Heritage Month,

Mis first-gen college grads hermanos y hermanas. First of all, y'all are badass. Second, how old were you when you realized you could attend college?

For me, I don't think the idea really settled until I was about 14 in 10th grade.

I genuinely do not mean to be controversial but please we don't need taxonomic authorities in the TITLES of papers that aren't about systematics

I love packages that have two versions of functions when things like color are in the function names

New postdocs, if you haven't already, consider investing in a pair of noise cancelling headphones. They are a game changer!!

Some labs might have funds for this.

Do you expect minorities to reframe their struggles as strengths to give the impression of resilience or adaptability? That is bias.

We are inherently resilient and adaptable, we did not struggle out of choice and we did not live through our struggles to impress anyone.
bhjuarez.bsky.social
So it annoys teachers and students alike 😂

The idea that we need a compelling story to be passionate and good at our jobs is false.
bhjuarez.bsky.social
Compelling story? What compelling story?! I practically grew up in my house and was not allowed to go outside and we rarely had visitors. (actually why I fell in love with museums, during [free] field trips).
bhjuarez.bsky.social
Another issue is the "compelling story" thing we teach.

The issue with this practice is that almost by default, due to having less privilege, many "compelling stories" are drawn from less source material.

While I have to parade my poor brown person story to impress, what do my white colleagues do instead and how is that interpreted differently?
bhjuarez.bsky.social
But since needing to make those statements is not going away any time soon, there's also another important reason why we need more representation:

A minority vs. non-minority reading those statements will have a different understanding, due to differences in their decades of lived experiences.
bhjuarez.bsky.social
Sure, my background contributes to some personal qualities that make me badass in so many ways, but it doesn't take the trauma out of writing those statements.

We shouldn't have to make those statements. Period. This is exactly why we need better representation at the faculty level.

I feel like I am in the Hunger Games describing how all my struggles made me better at this white collar job. Growing up poor sure as hell did not make me better at my job. There, I said it. I've wanted to say it for YEARS.
bhjuarez.bsky.social
I feel silly writing the tired lines "i am low income" "i am a minority" "i am first gen". It's like that is all we are to academics and if we do not make those facts perfectly explicit, we will be deemed as lesser than.

We should stop using metrics based solely on publications in English to evaluate the performance of researchers. Instead we should focus on *what* is published, not just *where*, as advocated by DORA: sfdora.org

The Declaration on Research Assessment recognizes the need to improve the ways in which the outputs of scholarly research are evaluated.
