Zohran Mamdani argues that “freeze the rent” is not just a way of delivering relief from exorbitant housing costs—it is the only way to get enough voters on board with a growth agenda. Rogé Karma spoke with Mamdani to see if he has a point.

On this lovely Thanksgiving eve, our Los Angeles #rentcontrolledbuilding was informed our building had been sold (its a huge private equity firm, took some doing but we found them!). On Monday we all have to have paper checks again to pay rent and get them to an office over 30mins away.

What happens when a 40+ rent stabilized apartment building goes on the market for $14million? Can the new buyer toss out the tenants? What rights do tenants have?

Having affordable rentals taken away should NOT be tolerated in a state espousing to fight for the 99%. Apartments are HOMES for many.

@lacity.bsky.social Lots of 1099 and creative contractors I know just got notices that they must apply for a Business Tax Registration Certificate. This is one more pass through tax that is hurting many lower and middle class workers who aren't being employed full-time.

American People: We want affordable healthcare, housing & groceries. We want our children to not get shot in schools. We want fair, free democracy. And also, tax billionaires.

Billionaires: here is something unwanted, harmful, expensive and purely capitalistic. Please tell me how awesome I am.
of all the things I am not going to buy, this is the thing I am not going to buy the most

Cuts for the poorest who can least afford it, not cuts to the richest who have more than enough for many lifetimes? We should be uplifting ppl so that no one has to struggle at demoralizing levels ever again. What about reaching our hands out & down rather than hoarding, fear-mongering + abusing?
Republicans in Congress want to cut health care for millions of people... to pay for more tax cuts for millionaires.

So tired of the performative, substance-lacking world we live in, void of curiosity or empathy.

As a long-time @pittsburghsteeler.bsky.social fan, I will no longer be attending or watching games if he becomes our quarterback. This is not the culture I except from my hometown team nor will I support it. Utterly shameful.
Keep this man out of the AFC North. Please.

Doesn't the The Posse Comitatus Act prevent this without Congress?

Once again asking the wrong questions. Prior to the bill progressing, why didn't Dems use other means + procedures to delay/halt/destroy this atrocity? How is that when Dems control all branches they can still be thwarted, but when Republicans do, Dems can do nothing?
Sen. Schumer defended voting with the GOP to pass the government funding bill, saying a "shutdown had to be avoided."

"They could furlough employees forever and just have the federal government shrink to half its size en masse," he said. "That would have been the worst, worst, worst alternative."
'We had an awful choice': Schumer defends voting with GOP saying shutdown would be worse
Democrats have few options for challenging President Trump and GOP majorities in Congress. Some on the left say they had a chance last week, but top Democratic Sen. Chuck Schumer voted with the GOP…

Get your shit together. The American people are begging for PROACTIVE responses. Enough head-scratching about the break down of norms. The norms are broken. Now, DO SOMETHING!
People keep asking me if Dems are divided between left and center of party. Nope. We are divided over old and new ways of fighting. That 20th Century playbook ain’t stopping a dictator.

How many times do we need to move the goal posts?"He won't do that..." Then he does, and all you say the next time is "Well he won't do that..."
How many times must he show you what he is before you believe in the evil and become PROACTIVE??

The smug grotesque smiles + laughter from a bunch of pompous cowards who are endorsing an unprovoked invasion of an ally country is despicable. War, destruction, poverty, inhumanity...these things are the farthest from funny and yet everyday these monsters yuk it up at their coffee klatch.
Lutnick: "The best way to actually merge the economies of Canada and the United States is for Canada to become our 51st state ... Canada is gonna have to work with us to really integrate their economy, and as the president said, they should consider the amazing advantages of being the 51st state."

It's ok to be wrong.
It's ok to not be educated about something.
It's ok to say "I was wrong"
It's ok to not speak and just listen.

Let's normalize not always having to be right and teach people how to take accountability. These things are not inherent.

Really think that we need more basic studies in sociology, psychology, philosophy and anthropology starting in elementary school. Understanding more than your small corner of the world opens a mind up to complex ideas, critical thought and empathy, driving connection and reasoning skills.
