Writing with an eye to being read—by a crush, by a workshop class, by six-dozen journal subscribers—changes the writing for the better. A writer can't simply dab poet-spackle over a rickety passage of text once the writer becomes conscious of a reader who may one day stumble through.

That's like asking if someone has ever done pushups in a bar fight.

Nobody does pushups in a bar fight, ever. But if you've done a lot of pushups, you will do pretty well in a bar fight.

Getting good at [task] is not just a function of doing [task] over and over.

Poetry is healthy for your mind.
