What a Bronze Bear Can Teach Us About Safer Streets

In Guelph, Ontario, there’s a sculpture called the Begging Bear, a 7.5-foot bronze figure standing just off Gordon Street, a busy road that cuts straight through the heart of the city.

😲 If this existed now, my life would be so much better! I commute by bus to Hamilton four times a week.
In my story for the Guelph Transportation Summit (Oct 18th - taaguelph.com/summit), I talk about taking the train from McMaster to Guelph.

Fun Fact: Ever heard of the GO Transit Hamilton-Guelph Line? This line was proposed in 1989 by the Think Rail Group, as part of a larger proposal for transit in Ontario.

This line would've travelled from the City of Hamilton to Guelph, linking 3 cities together in the western half of the GTHA.

Having healthy skepticism or as the media puts it - criticism for the police is awkward when you only have one traffic officer.

Hi, yes. You attended my accident last year and I decided to hand you over a business card to simplify our interaction 😂

Side eyes my 3 e-bikes and one folding bike in my studio apartment.... I am crazy though!

My e-bikes have gotten me through even my worst days. Some of my injuries would have made some trips more painful by car but I got to where I needed to go almost door to door! I credit them as part of my rehabilitations too.

While Bidgood acknowledges the importance of complying with the road rules, she says cyclists are often forced to make critical decisions with very little warning or time.

"Ultimately sometimes it comes down to a survival decision," she said.

Fear has never built a safer city -design has. When we build for it, safety becomes something we experience, not something we have to over enforce. Build for forgiveness, visibility, and belonging, and people will naturally meet it. That’s the heart of human infrastructure.

Made the #GoBus - I don't normally have this much luck!

Just over an hour home I think then a 20min walk from the station.

Just gotta charge my bike when I get home so I can make it to my regular 7am/ 7km appointment!

Mount pleasant!

I made a seat on my suitcase waiting for the #GoBus because I can't stand for very long lately. Doesn't make a huge difference with getting a seat on the bus where I don't have to climb the stairs - as a lot of people don't queue anymore and just push their way on.

Made the GoTrain - barely. First time with #Metrolinx #fareenforcement

My last bus should be before midnight so I had bought the $10 weekend day pass while still on Via.

Due to delay we had an immediate transfer at Ottawa - thankful not to have to go through the station to return back to the platform!

Off we go! First time being on the new trains - beautiful accessibility coach! I would love to take @viarailcanada.bsky.social as often as I used to but the cost is the #1 factor.

My coach bus here TO > OTT was $30 with tax vs $236 - $50 for the additional return distance on Via with the base price

Currently hoping to catch one of the last #GoTrains to Mount Pleasant transfer to a #GoBus then walk home from Guelph Central Station - making it home by 1am (it's 3:25pm)

Inter-city transit diary

Alexandria Ontario to Guelph Ontario

Currently an estimated 5hr 40min drive on Google Maps including construction 🚧 (let's be honest you always have to add a bit more with GTA traffic)

STATUS: Waiting on delayed @viarailcanada.bsky.social due to CN having priority

Build for the most vulnerable user and magically everyone else is safer too - even you, in your beloved lifted pickup!

“Why didn’t you take a different route?” Because the safe one adds 20 minutes and two seep hills.

If cars got bike treatment, you’d riot.

I'll be presenting at this summit with @bicyclemayorguelph.bsky.social . We will be sharing some short stories, imagining ourselves and Guelph in 20 years. I'm very excited!

It's #FreedomToMove Friday!

Tell me:
What wheels help you feel free?
What’s stopping you from walking, biking, or rolling more often?
Where in Guelph / where you live do you not feel safe to move?

Real stories shape better streets. Let’s hear yours.

Narrower motor lanes within safe norms, gateway pinch-ins at entries, human-scale lighting, and continuous, curb-separated space for walking and rolling create a street that teaches itself every hour of every day. That’s durable Vision Zero designs.

The Dutch “self-explaining road” approach is pretty neat: when the geometry, widths, edges, textures, and lighting all match the behavior we want, like slower speeds and predictable paths - people comply because it feels intuitive.
