I taught high school Language Arts 23 years. We worked mostly with short stories read in class. 2 fiction novels a year. 1 non-fiction work. One play.
1 or 2 students per class of 30 would read them end to end. Why bang your head against that wall?
I started media literacy as the main focus.

I have a huge orange Tom who requires 2 shots of insulin daily.
Never a problem. He'll even come remind me when I forget.
The people at his vet love him. Never gives anyone trouble.
I think he's smart enough to know why his health rebounded.

There is a difference between quietly sleeping a lot when they feel bad versus having BROKEN BONE grabbed by human hands and if you can't tell the difference I just hope the vet is charging you fuck off money and getting their student loans paid off.
