Thanks to all who joined our 2nd annual Islington Bike Day. Our volunteer mechanics tuned-up 40 bikes, our ride/parade highlighted need for safe connections to Bloor, we affixed dozens of new bells, generated lots of smiles & enjoyed visits from both MPP Fairclough + DeputyMayor Morley #biketo

Speed cameras essential for student safety, Ontario school boards say in plea to Ford government
Letter urges the province to refine the system rather than do away with automated speed enforcement cameras.

Lots of good messaging from Mayor Gordon here, "a former police officer who admits he usually sides with the premier, and has spoken to him about what he thinks should be done."
Summary thread for anyone who wants to write their MPP (especially if they are PC). www.billgordon.ca/speed-camera...

Claims that people are being ticketed for going one or two km over speed limit lack one thing ... any actual evidence.

Thanks to the TO Star's Donovan Vincent for testing the claims, which amount to no more than "someone told me."

Donovan Vincent: Are drivers really getting speed camera tickets for going a few km/h over the limit?
Part of the contentiousness of speed cameras is confusion about when exactly drivers are ticketed.

A map I'm really enjoying is this recent one from U of T school of cities. It's showing commute mode from 2021 census so some caveats but still clearly shows nodes where transit investment and allowing more commercial/employment would help reduce car trips.

3 problems facing Alberta premier’s pipeline plan:

"1. the oil and gas industry doesn’t want to pay for it.
2. nobody in B.C. wants to pave the way for it.
3. the world’s moving away from oil."

Well said Mark Taylor, Calgary, AB! (in Ltrs to Ed, TOStar)

Smith unveiled the move on Wednesday, announcing her government will put up $14 million to lead a new pipeline pitch to draft an application to fast-track the project under Ottawa's

Only advantage to drivers is that they can race through The Kingsway, until they hit the pinch point at South Kingsway and Jane. It's not just cyclists that lose, but anyone that walks, esp with kids or the elderly, in that section.

And of course, the big investment in bike lanes at Six Points (between Resurrection Rd and Kipling) becomes a stranded asset.

This "priority removal section" for the bike lane on Bloor W demonstrates that Ford and Sarkaria were never serious about finding parallel secondary routes. Where is the parallel route here? They don't care. www.thestar.com/news/gta/the...
A map of part of the Bloor West bike lane showing that a section beween Islington and Resurrection Rd was prioritized for removal. Nearby streets curve off in various directions, avoiding railway tracks and providing no straightforward alternative.

Everyone should write their mayor and councillor across Ontario. they need to hear from you. They are often just windsocks and a few constituents making noise will get their attention

The speeders have their attention currently.

Take a few minutes and look up who yours are.

I can't find a statement from my mayor so I have written to him. Hope he signs on.

“A lot of the people I’ve heard from are families that enjoy the safety of roads now — they’re letting their kids walk or bike to school — and they’re concerned that ripping out cameras will take us back to less safe roads.” - Guelph Mayor Cam Guthrie

How Doug Ford went from 0 to 60 on speed cameras — and why he’s ignoring the flashing warning signs
Premier Doug Ford’s vow to outlaw speed cameras, six years after his government enabled their existence, flies in the fact of scientific evidence and carries risk for the populist premier.

So Ford wants more signs in front of speed cameras:

“It’s not that (municipalities) don’t know how to do it; it’s that they don’t want to do it,” the premier said, apparently unaware that they’d already done it. - @thekeenanwire.bsky.social

Edward Keenan: Toronto doesn’t need Doug Ford’s say-so to get things done. We can go right ahead and do them
Any Ontario mayor who's waiting on the premier to do their homework for them is unlikely to make the honour roll.

"when 15,000 auto sector jobs were at risk during the 2008 financial crisis, govts acted aggressively to protect them. Yet here we face triple that number of threatened housing jobs, with little acknowledgment from policymakers." #onpoli

Ontario’s housing crisis is, somehow, about to get even worse. This is how we can fix it
Toronto's condo crash is just the start of a much bigger problem.
