Yeah, the current viable routes add a lot of extra distance and way finding and even then they're still nowhere near as safe as the sunshine path and the existing footscray rd.

We're calling on the state & federal governments to live up to Albo's 2019 promise to build safe bike lanes on Napier & Buckley Streets. These lanes would link the Veloway to central Footscray, the new hospital, Vic Uni & the Sunshine Path. Build the missing #westlink
#Westlink description linking sunshine to the veloway.

It certainly seems like they've finished works on it.

Apparently it's nearly October, which in itself is quite shocking. But it also means that it's nearly "Biketober" Register at www.lovetoride.net/maribyrnong, log rides, possibly receive prizes and hope that by logging data, councils will be more willing to provide infrastructure.
Sign saying "Get riding this October"

Looks like the east side Maribyrnong river trail and Port Phillip monument are finally open again.

With this, the new ford crossing and the eventual Kororoit creek trail extension Altona will really be a lot easier to get in and out of.

Hallelujah. The local community have campaigned for a safe crossing for active transport for over 20 years. It's finally going to happen.
The local Altona community and Hobsons Bay City Council have long supported a safer connection for bike riders and pedestrians over Laverton Creek.

The existing road bridge is used by more than 16,000 vehicles a day and has no separation for pedestrians and bike riders.

Between 30 June 2020 and 30 June 2025, 15 crashes occurred on Queen Street between Victoria and Maidstone streets. Four crashes involved bike riders and four resulted in serious injury.

The shared use path bridge will run parallel to the existing road bridge on Queen Street. It will fill a missing east to west link for bike riders and pedestrians, providing a safer environment for all road users.

We’re also introducing a safer 60km/h speed limit on Queen Street from Maidstone Street to east of the Laverton Creek Bridge.

By making sure the speed limit is right for all road users we can help prevent crashes from happening, and at the very least reduce their severity when they’re unavoidable.
We’ll be implementing a 60km/h limit in September 2025.
Works on the SUP bridge are expected to start in 2026, and we’ll be back in touch with the community before construction starts.

Why are we building a separate shared use bridge?
Queen Street Bridge is one of the key connectors between the east and west of Hobsons Bay. There is high demand for pedestrian and bike rider facilities in the area due to the proximity of the Altona Sports Centre, Laverton Football Club, Altona Pirates Basketball Club, Queen of Peace Parish Primary School and Catholic Church, as well as various beaches and parks.

The new SUP bridge will improve safety and connectivity by creating a dedicated and accessible path for bike riders and pedestrians, where they currently have to take a significant detour.

By improving safety and access for people walking and bike riding, more people will be encouraged to use active modes to cross Laverton Creek.

If the Federation Trail flooding can't be fixed, maybe they can get the Westgate Punt to start running services on it.

This has so much similarity with Angus Collins' death. A young life cut short due to changes to temporary construction and a concrete truck turning without visibility.

It's so hard to see these tragedies play out after so much advocacy trying to prevent that exact thing is ignored.

Nope, I guess at this stage it seems likely that they finish everything first, but who knows.

Nice day for a ride. Would be nicer still if we were all authorised
New bike path with "authorised personal only sign" closing it.

Rode the Federation Trail today but only one way because it's flooded yet again. Instead of fixing the problem all the authorities do is put up a sign stating the bleeding obvious 🙄
