so the process of writing is a process of realizing how imperfect and incomplete that idea was, and actually working out all the rest of it. writing, in other words, is a process of thinking: a particularly disciplined one, that takes you from a warm feeling to a genuine reality.

the WHOLE THING about writing is realizing that you don't "already" have "the whole thing" in your head. when it's just an idea that warm feeling smooths over all the gaps. but you've got a germ. a seed. there are *so many choices* left to make--real, hard, meaningful, creative choices.

I mean, do the riders think it’s worth it or are they obligated by their sponsors to go to all the big events in their sport each season? www.singletracks.com/community/8-...

And it’s absurd that social media sites are censoring videos in which these injuries occur while still allowing other videos of the events to proliferate. We can’t lobby for better safety culture as long as we’re projecting this fantasy world where athletes can do these wild feats with zero risk.

The bros on the internet arguing like “well if we added safety features it wouldn’t be the same sport” and “the riders know the risk” cool so we’re allowing athletes to risk potentially avoidable life-altering or ending injuries *checks notes* on principle?

Literature. Revels in the nastiest parts of the physical in a way that a) I think is really difficult to sustain in writing and b) also rewrites and amplifies the pleasurable elements in contrast. + a really well-crafted ensemble cast.

I'm calling it on Turn of the Screw as a dnf, unfortunately. simply was not vibing with the style, life is too short, my to-read list too long, &c.

First: Hungerstone! Billed as a feminist Carmilla retelling—definitely historical fiction with modern sensibilities, plus excellent historical research backing. Messy women characters, gory and lovely.

Very compelled by the pickle situation here

And! Even if we only consider modern internet-based fandoms, which most people seem to mean, there’s SUCH a wide variety of approaches and styles—just like in any other type of fiction—that it just seems a bit silly to blame entire (often vilifed) prose trends on ~the rise in fandom~.
