I do love that the villain in the first dirty harry became Garak in Star Trek, possibly its best drawn (ambiguous) character

Were the trends really green if the civilian population was not on your side because of all your operations?

You are!

The void in all this seems no strategy, no political aims, no actual outcome they were working to achieve through all this effort.

Depressing.

But also sounds like it didn't exactly win many local friends in the province either.

Sure I will!...excerpts are fascinating.

I'm not even 50 and yet I grew up knowing WW2 vets and partisans and I basically wouldn't exist unless my fathers family left Slovenia in the 30's because, peasants they were, they could still see it was going down bad in Europe and not the place to be.

Post-these strikes, did it *really* weaken these networks or did it just cycle in a new level of of more hardline, uncompromising and extreme replacements?

If it's a really close friend or family member I just say "surely you can do better than that" to shame them when they do that. It usually works. If they do ever say it then it's certainly not in my presence ever again.
November 28, 2025 at 9:37 PM
You can't ban words anyway. I just gently chide people for this shit when they do "surely you could use some other word, like English has lot's of words", move on and mark them as an asshole. No need to go to war about, but no need to be close or have anything other than distant relationship either

I just ordered it.

A lot people who hold power - govt, corporate or otherwise - are creatures of the 20th C.The next cohort down - Gen X certainly is, Milllenials too. Not surprising the 20th C looms still. It's going to take the wholesale changeover to those who never knew it shake it's chains off.

Shooting at "squirters" after a strike seems...bad. But how good was the human intelligence they received? Time and time again in books and articles it's been noted that the Americans were often easily manipulated by locals settling scores, not ID'ing real threats.

oh, those days when it was all about values....

Wouldn't hurt

I know the exact moment you are are talking about.! The academic had the most toff baritone accent ever and he just said " I think it's all stories made up later and no one can know". It was wonderful. BTW , Bragg has Fisked many a historian too on that show with sharp questions.

Anyway, my main point was really "I hate the term Western Civ" because it just shuts the rest of the world out, and also I know more about India. But same goes for China, South America, South East Asia, Africa etc

That's pretty startling stuff for a King to post on edicts from Afghanistan most points of India. And he has the animal protection stuff there too. How much of this translated on the ground into actual practice, we'll never know, but the statements themselves are pretty unique.
November 28, 2025 at 6:33 AM
Just add that archaeological evidence backs up the fact that there was a "major" fight against Kalinga - thousands of arrowheads and other war implements have been found. This is the war in the edicts he expresses great regret for the suffering he caused. Then he champions in the edicts non-violence

Arguably Ashoka in the edicts is a more real figure than the Buddha.
November 28, 2025 at 6:29 AM
We know "next to nothing of Ashoka " is true. Same with the Buddha. Most of it is fantasy. But the major and minor rock edicts were and are advances in governance and practice that stand on their own feet and in likely his own words.
