These fascist thugs should just say “white people” and stop pretending that classical thought, golden-age Islamic philosophy, renaissance authors, enlightenment thinker, American pragmatists, English liberals, &c has shit to do with their know-nothing race war.

Trump and the GOP are going to kill the immigration that has Made America Great. The beacon of liberty is dimming

In Australia at the time it was pretty fucking bad. We certainly had a better government on the issue, but the general level of hatred against gays was pretty fucking awful. The language directed at them in public was pretty incredible. 90's was terrible but slowly improving.

Union forces had suffered some 5,800 casualties but inflicted twice that on the rebels. When a chaplain asked General Thomas whether the dead should be sorted and buried by state in the new military cemetery, the Virginian who stayed loyal replied "Mix 'em up. I'm tired of states' rights.” (21

I don't think it's hyperbolic to say that if a Democratic President pardoned a guy his family did business with and that guy was then accused of facilitating payments to Hamas, there would be Congressional investigations and editorial demands for impeachment proceedings

I wish I didn’t have to share this. But the BBC has decided to censor my first Reith Lecture.

They deleted the line in which I describe Donald Trump as “the most openly corrupt president in American history.” /1

I guess one question is whether we can get back to a “normal” democracy if things are this bad and maybe getting worse with 3 years left. How long would the “doing ok” frame last? Are the two frames linked?

I just can’t see past the enormous power of the presidency and the enormity of US power that allows Trump to harm on a massive scale at home & abroad. America has done many terrible things. But the scale of this is staggering and losing grip on power doesn’t usually translate into less suffering.

We can keep up the drumbeat in outlets that do reach people with some agency. We can celebrate the victories. We can document the atrocities. We can donate to food banks, immigrant-rights groups, politicians, INGOs...

And we can be willing to take real risks if necessary.

👆 is related to 👇. Why aren't the ~10 people in Congress who could immediately change the entire dynamic of American politics getting constant hard questions from the media about why they continue to be total cowards & oath violators?
Also another reminder that <10 people in Washington - all of whom are Republicans & all of whom keep getting total daily free passes from the media about their cowardice - could end most of the madness tomorrow by simply caucusing with the Democrats & giving them control of both the House & Senate.
Suddenly the special election in TN-07 becomes potentially hugely consequential. It shouldn’t be competitive, but if Democrats steal it, when Greene resigns the Republican majority will be down to 218-216 w a sure Dem seat with no special scheduled in Texas.

Two days ago, the President of the United States called for the murder of Congressional officials, & we've just entirely moved on as a country. Total failure of every societal & political institution. We are not a serious country.
Just a reminder that it's nice the Mamdani thing went better than everyone expected, but Trump should still be immediately impeached & removed for unprecedented things that were once beyond the pale of American politics.
It's always hard to pick a worst day politically, but today the president called for the death of members of the opposition party, and the administration decided that people were being too hard on the swastika

Yes, of course, none of this will happen yet & will only happen once the few supposedly "moderate" Republicans left stop being total cowards. But we need to talk about these solutions as the <actual solutions>, rather than wasting so much time on Doing A Popularism or Funny Words or The Argument.
This will be true even if we have free/fair elections in 2026/28 & Dems run the table. They won't win 60 seats in the Senate. So <any> solutions & institutional reforms to fix/reverse/avoid more fascism will require GOP support. No, it's not likely. But that's doesn't make it less necessary or true.
If the president can simply rendition legal residents on a whim, & he can simply cut funding for anything he wants, & he can violate all of our treaty commitments, & he can monetize the presidency w/o consequence, then what exactly makes us believe that accepting election results is any different?
