I cannot stress how good the writing in Baby Steps is. I’ve described it as if you did Silent Hill characterization in a comedy. Really beautiful, largely improvised, magical realist narrative aimed directly at its audience.

I know I keep talking about it but I just finished Baby Steps. That ending got me choked up. Honestly my favourite game I've played in god knows how long. This feels like a real all-timer for me. Absolutely everything about it just feels so... perfect. I'm properly giddy about it all. ART, MAN

but once you've done that you get to watch peak yuri theater

it's a movie about graduating high school and trying to grapple with "oh fuck i have to move on in life. what do i do with uh, all these gay emotions i have for the girl i've been dating for 4 years"

with answers ranging from "we gotta break up" to "we are cursed to eternally orbit each other"

but if you do watch the show, (which i think is pretty good, a solid utena-like)

you then get to watch the movie which is just "hey remember the simmering romantic tension between those characters? here it is displayed in the coolest, most visually and musically spectacular way you can imagine"

it's hard to recommend the revue starlight movie because it's not so much a movie as much as it's a bunch of incredibly over the top musical numbers focusing on each of the cast's gay feelings for each other

and to understand that you have to watch the show (only 12 episodes)

my main conclusion from this isn't so much "the game awards don't matter" (although i think that's a fair conclusion) it's "the game awards don't spend any time on games that are small enough that the bump could make a difference"

i will say tho the "such as skip and loafer, where they're often mishandled" section, nah skip and loafer did it near perfectly. genuinely the best trans character i've read in a manga that isn't about being trans. i think about nao all the time and when her chapter gets animated i am gonna bawl

io9: Your portrayal of Indigenous and transgender characters—like the Lnu tribe and Cordelia—stands out in a media landscape where such representation is still rare outside of series like Golden Kamuy, Skip and Loafer, and Paradise Kiss, where they’re often mishandled. What impact do you hope these characters have on expanding the narrative terrain? How do you see your storytelling challenging the ethnocentric lens that dominates much of mainstream media when it comes to that representation?

Yukimura: I did have written characters in [Vinland Saga] from a marginalized ethnic group [and] who are LGBTQ featured here. I actually wanted to portray a character with a disability in the story, too. However, because of the setting, I really couldn’t find the right place to incorporate such a character into the story. One thing I really don’t understand, though, is why do people attack such folks? Is it because they’re different? Why do they just focus on bad things about these groups and generalize them? I truly don’t understand why people do such things. I plainly feel sad when it comes to the way people treat each other.

To me, it’s quite normal for people to have uniqueness. It’s almost needless to say that we all individually have a uniqueness that might be considered different than what is the majority. For example, I grew up in an era where higher education was considered to be the most important thing in society in Japan. You almost had no paths in life outside of that structure. I actually do live outside of that structure, and I’m living perfectly fine. I really want to say that uniqueness is okay. I don’t understand why people are making those judgments to say, “This is okay, but this is not okay.”

I haven’t really thought about what this type of storytelling or character would have an impact on society at all. I’m just writing, drawing, and portraying society as I see it and what I think is normal from my eyes in the manga. If people don’t agree with that version of what I think is a normal society, then oh well. (Laughs) That’s too bad. Those people don’t have to read my manga.

this is making me imagine a succubus who started doing safe, controlled level drain as a sex work thing, all the kingdoms heroes are probably WAY into that, and in the process accidentally became the most powerful individual in the kingdom by a factor of 5

level drain is like a very specific porn niche and it's always so unrealistic like "oh the hero loses a level and the succubus gains one" thats not how that works. thats not how that works. if the hero is like level 95 and the succubus is level 1 stealing one level would get her to like 30 at least

Baby steps does this really well by actually having a thematic thrust behind it all, being a game about something

The copycats for getting over it did not have any of the style or wit, just the bad narration

And I can't take a bunch of baby steps copies that just go LOL DONKEY DICKS WHAAAAA

getting over it inspired a bunch of ragegames that all thought "we gotta have a guy doing narration and saying philosophy at you" and they were bad

I'm sorry if you like this gacha game but your game stole "cute girls with cool hologram-y halos" from me, the girl who wears one 24/7, and I will not forgive until I get a new anime to do this but with adults. Or at the least without quite as much "isn't the middle schooler sexy" eugh
