The Pleasance will also undergo some acoustic improvements and the re-establishment of the Pleasance Cabaret Bar as an intimate space for performance and film screenings. The Pleasance Salisbury will provide spaces to accommodate events previously held in the Dining Room.

The Students’ Association is working with the University to provide alternative spaces for social events, informal study, and eateries during the closure of Teviot Row House. These spaces will include Potterrow, the Pleasance, and some additional University spaces in the central campus area.

The Teviot Row House upgrade project is expected to commence in late October 2023 and be completed by Spring 2025, subject to final planning approvals and contractor appointments. During this time, Teviot Row House will be closed.

The project will also create new spaces, including a student community lounge, group workspaces, a wellbeing studio, and a gallery.

2. The Closure of Teviot Row House

The University and the Students’ Association are collaborating to upgrade Teviot Row House, the oldest purpose-built student union building in the world. The upgrade will improve accessibility, toilet provision, and environmental building performance.

Due to this ongoing situation, graduating students are hit hardest with their work unmarked and grade uncertain.

Continuing students like myself will have their grades delayed as to prioritize graduating students.

In addition, our vice-chancellor got a £43,000 pay rise during the boycott!

This boycott in part of the ongoing pay, working conditions, and pensions dispute between members of the University and College Union (UCU) and the university.

This boycott is throughout the UK, not just Edinburgh.

1. The Marking and Assessment Boycott

Staff participating in the boycott have 50% of their pay withhold by the university.

Boycotting staff members will not grade assessments, help supervise or organize exams, or attend exam boards and meetings.
