I and many others don't think they did. I'm glad you liked it Bryan but that doesn't mean that people who went to watch a movie touting itself as an adaptation of a book they read who don't recognize that book are wrong for being disappointed and criticizing the adaptation.

By making this movie a romance and removing the themes of the original Fennel is saying is that she can't imagine a poc being a romantic lead despite the original text explicitly saying he is. Making the object of white Heathcliff's romantic and cultural jealousy a brown guy is also Telling.

I don't think I am saying that the movie is bad, I am saying the movie is a bad adaptation of a book. I don't agree that you can just take the aesthetic facade of a material to tell any story you want. Why are they making a Wuthering Heights movie if they have no interest in telling that story?

Normally I agree that a movie doesn't need to be the book, (I think the LotR films are a shiny example of that), but, this movie whitewashed its main character and deleted the themes of the book entirely. Instead it seems just a sweaty, unrecognizable fanfic version of the book in a pretty dress.

As a long time family Hound haver, they are devious beasts, often only appeased with violence. 😌

I'm about 6 months into that grief journey myself 😔 I can't say it gets easier, but you'll be ok. 🩷

Ahhh Pearly Pond, may her legend of being absolutely festooned with corpses be whispered into the ears of hapless freshmen for eternity

I'd recommend it for middle readers as an inroad to understanding what's happening in the world around them. I'm sure this was that for me. It might be easier for modern kids to see themselves in Zlata's story, to then see themselves in the unheard little girl in Ukraine, Congo, Venezuela etc 4/4

understand something completely beyond her understanding. I found the book in my library's collection and wondered why it's not as popular and widely available as Ann's diary. I also found myself wondering if there are little girls in Ukraine or Congo or Venezuela who are keeping diaries 3/4

Zlata is still alive. The popularity of the book helped get her and her family to safety. She's an activist now living in Ireland.
I read this book in middle school and remember finding myself attached to Zlata, who was around my age at the time. It did its job in helping a random American kid 2/4
