It's not illegal to own and operate a still. Steam distillation, say, to collect essential oils of plants, is entirely legal.

It's aonly illegal to operate a still if you are getting ethyl alcohol out the discharge port and don't have a distiller's license.

Yep. 1st Minn. paid a damned high price for it. They deserve to keep it.

We have a little hibachi that Lodge Cast Iron calls its “Sportsmen’s Grill.”

As you should have.

Was eating at the bar in a $$$$ restaurant once and saw a Big Businessman order 4 fingers of the 21 y/o Macallan single malt ON THE ROCKS.

Exactly so.

Is true. I have a *lot* of respect for the Jesuits. Among other things, the best commander I served under in 24 years in the Army had been Jesuit-educated. I do feel sometimes, though, that too many folks are a little too willing to pretend that the Jesuits are faultless.

You liked Master LI and Number Ten Ox!!! That trilogy is one of my favorite unknown fantasy classics.

Still, they aren't perfect. A Jesuit who taught classes on religion at Boston College High School was just arrested and charged with having sex with a child.

Yep. Dealt with stuff like that, too. For much of the last 16 years of my working life I was in part a subject-matter-expert on the safe transportation of hazardous materials, world-wide, via any mode of transport. Had an entire shelf in my office bookcase full of regs I had to follow.

Fortunately, I have never felt any desire to climb Everest.

In my last job we regularly shipped 200-gal tanks of RFNA. RFNA is REALLY scary.

I do too. But I also understand the thermodynamics of the nitrating reaction, and refuse to play with it without proper hardware and adequate safety measures.

Oh, gods, Roger was/is one of my favorite authors. And don’t’ discount his shorter works. “A Rose For Ecclesiastes” is 61 years old, and it is STILL a gut-wrenching story to read.

Leyendecker also illustrated a collection of Irish myths. Here is his vision of Queen Maeve:

When I lived in Texas, we had school districts so small that their one high school played 7-man football. This is pretty much peak Texas.

...in the Flagship lounge after spending the night on the floor of the terminal was lifesaving. (Yeah, they started handing out hotel vouchers at 1AM, while saying we needed to check back in at the gate at 7 AM. Fuck that shit. We were both soldiers. Wasn't the first time we'd slept on a floor.)

We had a 18-hour delay at Miami enroute to BA in early 2023. Our first bird mechanicaled, the original crew ran out of hours by the time they got stuff transferred to the replacement bird, and American had problems assembling a replacement crew. Being able to get a shower and breakfast...

Yeah. I'm just up the road from Mother Angelica's fancy basilica and all. Am not Catholic, (although all my mother's family are,) but have never been impressed by all the arguments about how the changes after Vatican II are all heretical. Shit changed after every other ecumenical council.
