I lived for a few years in Bettendorf as a child in the 1970's. To the best of my recollection, I never saw mangos, kiwi fruit, apples other than Red Delicious or Granny Smith, fresh herbs, berries except for a brief seasonal window, and Bosc pears

The one part of economic life that I do believe has declined is the quality of affordable rental housing. I could afford to rent a decent studio apartment on the edge of a hip neighborhood on a graduate student stipend. My son pays half his income in rent.

Tom, I wish we could send folks back in a time machine to the produce 1980's supermarket in an upper middle class town. They would think, "Where are we, the Soviet Union? I only see two kinds of apples and two kind lettuce. Where are the baby carrots and the arugula?"

Yes, but a host need to clean before and after folks shown up for game night at home. Meeting up at a cafe is much easier!
