Computer programmer. Gets stuff cheap on Wednesdays. Naturalised citizen. Beer. Music of various or uncertain genres. I have no idea about movies. Just to be clear, when England play South Africa at anything I shout for South Africa.
After listening through my collection year by year and reporting on hopefully interesting things in each year I am now casting around for 2025 records. And this is fun. Slightly laid back, countryish mellow psychdelia.

Eliza Carthy stole the show at Richard Thompson's 70th birthday show with an acapella The Great Valerio. She pursues that idea here. It's a very solo album, and most of the time it's just her singing. She's a good singer & picks her material well. Yes, "Valerio" is included 1/

#chronoListening 2024. Leyla McCalla maintains her high standards but she's a long way from where she started. This is folk rock now. The folk side of the equation is that of the African diaspora in the Caribbean, principally Haiti where her family is rooted. I find it hard to find comparisons 1/

#chronoListening 2024 Orla Gartland puts out a strong second album. It's not a great change up from her debut, but she maintains quality. Good album. Same smart, empathetic songs, same sharp production. Arooj Aftab does change up a bit, and not just by singing in English. There's an undulation 1/

#chronoListening 2023 ex-Raincoat Gina Birch put out her first solo album in her 60s. It's a joy. She built up on her laptop over the years. Full of great bass grooves, multilayered dub effects. The messaging is right on & it's as infectious as all get out of here. Got great reviews. Believe them 1/

Great game of cricket going on at Lord's. It's not definite, but the Proteas can win this. Which will show that we have players other than Kagiso Rabada. Nice to see Bavuma playing worthwhile knocks on a pitch that has never been easy.

The lockdown caused major problems for musicians, but also gave us some interesting music. I already mentioned Iain Matthews hitting a songwriting streak, including a song about how bad it had been for him. Ben Folds got stuck in Australia, and with no way /1

There's so much fine music being released, much of it off the beaten path.
S.G. Goodman grew up gay in the small town South. She takes contemporary country music & uses it to fire back. She's a great singer who knows when a whisper is louder than a yell. And her songs 1/

#chronoListening 2022 Bluegrass begat "New Acoustic" which begat an increasingly diverse, eclectic group of artists who continue to expand what came before them. Aoife O'Donovan usually works in groups but releases the occasional solo set. There's a feel to her compositions which reminds me of 1/

#chronoListening 2022 Janis Ian announced her last album. She'll carry on writing songs. And she still has her chops. Stylistically this is in the same ballpark as her previous album IE minimalist. She still has good songs & voice & so minimal is OK. She lands some big punches early on. If you're 1/

#chronoListening 2021. I knew about Allison Russell via Rhiannon Giddens, around whom much happens. She had an awful childhood, being abused by her stepfather (abetted by her mother) from age 5. This violent betrayal informs her solo debut. Somehow there's always light (or the belief) at the end 1/

#chronoListening 2021 Orla Gartland hits the ground running with a smart, thoroughly up to date, indy pop album full of sharp, well observed songs set in a world of social media & online shopping. I'm not surprised she got such strong reviews for this, but post-Covid reviews were even less use 1/

#chronoListening 2020 but maybe not for Iain Matthews who just carries on ploughing the same old high quality farrow. His production values are impeccable. He always has a good guitar player on board. The song choices are strong & his own voice is barely touched by the years. What's not to like? 1/

Chris Forsyth stretches out again on a live album. He's pretty interesting and exciting in jam band mode, but not sloppy. BTW he's influenced by the two Richards: Lloyd & Thompon. Bless him. I'm not sure the date stamp on the Newman album is correct, in fact 1/

Another album from Chile's number one Afrobeat band. I find this band interesting beyond the albums (which I do enjoy). They grew up in the aftermath of Pionochet's brutal regime & so they deal with myths about land and who was living on it. Do all countries have this stuff 1/

Another guy who just rolls on & on. He started off with classic punk-informed album and then got restless and started moving on. Now he seems to have given up trying to be a classical musician, but you hear echoes of many phases of his career here. He doesn't see the need 1/

Eliza Carthy as she's almost never heard on an album: solo (well... mostly). The opening track is inventive & surprising as she sings over multiple violins played by striking the strings with sticks. She made this to repay her band after she & they got stiffed. 1/

#chronoListening 2018 Melissa Laveaux is an alt rocker oh Haitian heritage. That island's rich musical history has lived in the shadow of that of other Caribbean islands. Here she conjures up a sort of Haitian folk rock, skewed towards by the production & guitars, but still shining a light on her 1/

#chronoListening 2018. Guitarists. Gwenifer Raymond made a big impact with her solo debut. She plays finger style acoustic with a lot of John Fahey influence & relentless attack. Richard Thompson jammed with Hemdrix in 60s London, and he's not done yet. His playing here is potent & resourceful.

Olivia Chaney made a big splash early on. Her second solo album is stripped down, intimate, a slow burn. Cha Wa are a New Orleans funk band with a singer who likes dressing up in Native American costume, & on this explains the link between Mardi Gras & Native Americans. And 1/

#chronoListening 2017 Offa Rex is a collaboration between the Decemberists & Olivia Chaney. Their only album is an instant folk rock classic. Jerry Douglas is the MVP of Nashville. Producing & playing on Lord knows how many records, hugely influential as a lap steel player. Here he & his ace band 1/
