When Mr. Trump attacks democratic institutions, he does so in the manner of a car wreck — so flagrantly destructive as to command public attention. When the Supreme Court undermines our democracy, as it seems poised to do in Callais, it feels more like a slow poisoning: the attacks may be harder to notice, but they are just as deadly

Travis seems as if he’s had a good time and made good money shoveling coal into the outrage furnace. But it’s easy to make a misstep too. Michele Tafoya was the sideline reporter for Sunday Night Football, one of the most lucrative and prestigious assignments in sports television. She left to co-chair a losing gubernatorial campaign in Minnesota, and now she’s one of thousands of middling conservative influencers trying to stand out. A recent episode of her podcast, titled “What Is Free Speech Exactly? Can I Say That?,” has 245 views on YouTube as of this writing. If you don’t have a natural skill for getting conservative voters or podcast listeners excited, this is a dangerous transition to make.

(RNS) — Last month, the Rev. David Black stood in front of a Chicago-area U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement facility and spread his arms wide. Adorned in all black and wearing a clerical collar, the pastor looked up at a group of masked, heavily armed ICE agents on the roof and began to pray. “I invited them to repentance,” Black, a minister in the Presbyterian Church (USA), said in an interview. “I basically offered an altar call. I invited them to come and receive that salvation, and be part of the kingdom that is coming.” But when Black began to lower his arms a few seconds later, the agents responded to his spiritual plea by firing pepper balls, or chemical agents that cause eye irritation and respiratory distress, video footage shows. One struck Black in the head, exploding into a puff of white pepper smoke and forcing him to his knees. Fellow demonstrators rushed to his aid, and as the pastor rubbed his face in pain, the agents continued to fire. “We could hear them laughing,” Black said.
