Personally I think a lot of the problem is the instinctive fear of change a lot of people have; digging up fossil fuels and burning them is The Way Things Are Done, so anything that isn't that must be somehow bad and wrong. Possibly with a side of "they said nuclear would be clean and safe, too...".
