It never ceases to delight me how much humans love human curation - any library display gets shopped, no matter what it is. I could go to the shelf and pick out ten at random and put them on a table and every single person walking by would look at them. (Makes me wonder why I work so hard on it!)

My dad once turned up at Thanksgiving with two rando soldiers he met at the fucking airport, surprise! (We lived near Fort Jackson so they were tiny baby soldiers; we got a Christmas card that year from somebody’s mama.) Thanksgiving is when we welcome strangers! That is what we do!

Oh good! That’s easier because once they’re handled they’re handled! They won’t be shacking up with the neighbors. The thing is, all the advice is “stop up the places they can come in” and like yeah obviously but a cockroach can get through an unimaginably small space, that is not useful advice!

Are you in a situation where you share walls and such with other people? That makes it so much harder, for sure - definitely worthwhile to coordinate with neighbors and go after them all at once if that’s the case, otherwise they just hang out next door.

We put down boric acid everywhere we thought they’d go, which is freaking everywhere, and used bait traps along with the obvious stuff like being intense about leaving anything edible out, and it slowly worked. We were used to the big palmetto bugs but the German cockroaches holy shit.

So boric acid comes as a powder, the roaches walk through it and ingest it when they groom themselves. That means if it gets wet, you gotta reapply. You put it where you know they’re going to walk through it, obvs. Put it down in a light layer. It’s pretty safe for people if you avoid countertops.

I’m sure you’ve tried so many things, so you’ve probably already done boric acid, but when we had an incursion of the awful little German ones that’s the one thing that actually worked, once and for all. It’s a bit messy and it took a while to make a dent but it did do the job.

Actually if I remember that fic is an outlier because it has a blond Aiden - generally he’s darker skinned, roguish, curly hair, made up out of whole cloth by the sheer will of horny bitches. I love it so much.
