🚨Working paper alert🚨 This was the first project I started in my PhD, blessed with amazing co-authors! Glad to finally share our findings. Long story short: even largely symbolic and declarative state-sponsored homophobia can translate into real political behavior 👇

More than a decade of effort went into this magnificent dataset. What an incredible public good. People need to know how hard it is to do rigorous empirical work in political science.

Very happy to be able to share the polling-level dataset on Indian Parliamentary Elections 2009, 2014, 2019 that we have been working on for more than a decade. Both the data and the data descriptor are open access: rdcu.be/eujHH

Today we kick off this year’s Political Behaviour Seminar series at @lsegovernment.bsky.social with @alicirone.bsky.social on gender dynamics in online deliberation. Glad to co-host the seminars with @florianfoos.bsky.social, @sarahobolt.bsky.social and @mathiaspoertner.bsky.social! Details below 👇
Gender Dynamics in Online Deliberation: Evidence from the 2023 Meta Community Forum on AI Chatbots

Deliberative mini-publics are currently being employed throughout the world, and it has been well documented that women are less likely to exercise their voice in deliberation. Yet the advent of digital platforms that host discussions online could mitigate this gender gap, and make it easier to test theories about the design of deliberative institutions. Increasing descriptive representation — the number of women in a discussion group — could potentially improve women's frequency of participation and quality of experience; however, we know less about how these dynamics play out in deliberative settings that take place entirely online. Here, we leverage unique data from the 2023 Meta Community Forum on AI Chatbots, which brought together 1,541 people in a Deliberative Polling exercise that took place on a digital platform. Thanks to random assignment, the gender composition of each discussion room varies. We exploit the group composition to estimate how the number of female members in each group affects participation (as measured by speaking frequency and activity during the session), as well as self-reported measures of efficacy and satisfaction with deliberative processes. We find some descriptive evidence of a gender gap, but little to no effects of room composition on participation or evaluation; this has surprising implications for the design of digital deliberation.

For postdocs around, I can't recommend this enough! In just four weeks in Mannheim, I connected to lots of amazing young scholars, presented my research, finished writing up my dissertation and applied for my current job at LSE. MZES organized my stay so smoothly that I couldn't wish for more.

Yes this exactly why highly regarded journalists have always aimed to work at the Daily Mirror or Sun. Because they have valued the impact of trying to reach vast audiences, through manipulative corporatist media while being bullied rather than work in spaces where they can do their best work.

One of the biggest mistakes left-of-center pundits and influencers made was decamping to Bluesky. They made themselves irrelevant, shrunk their audiences, and dramatically lessened the positive impact they could have on our public debate at the precise time we needed it most.

🚨 New working paper alert! 🚨

I analyse how the UK Supreme Court declaring the Rwanda Scheme unconstitutional changed individuals' political values. I find that Britons become more supportive of racial and ethnic hierarchies after the ruling.

#APSA2025 in Vancouver was a fine event but we need to rethink organizing political science conferences in Canada. It puts additional barriers for non-U.S. citizens and perpetuates inequalities in the field. No wonder many international students on F1 visas could not attend.

I wrote a longer essay on how social status matters for far-right support. Many still wrongly associate the far right with the economically left behind. Taking social status seriously also cautions against the idea that deliverism will win back far-right voters.

Love this. I am 💯 with Blyth: more than half of my writing time is done in frustration with something I observe and think about, and the reason I keep on going despite all the rejections in academia/life is that I can’t stop being pissed off about smtg and want to make the world a tiny bit better.

Been busy recently organizing my move to the UK, but now I'm officially and finally in London! Sorry, no APSA this year, making a Canadian visa alongside all the other visa affairs here would've been too much for me. Enjoy Vancouver and say hi if you stop by in London!

Sehr gerne! Ich bin erst diese Woche nach England umgezogen und bin dann in der absehbaren Zeit fast immer in London. Aber online finde ich auf jeden Fall Zeit!
