More than a decade of effort went into this magnificent dataset. What an incredible public good. People need to know how hard it is to do rigorous empirical work in political science.

Very happy to be able to share the polling-level dataset on Indian Parliamentary Elections 2009, 2014, 2019 that we have been working on for more than a decade. Both the data and the data descriptor are open access: rdcu.be/eujHH

Hague in his 1st conference speech as leader: "I am proud to be British. I believe in the United Kingdom, and so do hundreds of thousands of British blacks and British Asians. I want to see men and women from our ethnic minorities playing their full part in the mainstream of our national life..."
stephenkb.bsky.social
Annoyingly Hague's full speech text doesn't appear to be online anywhere, so maybe there is something egregiously stupid in it, but it is a much more skilful bit of 'I lead the party that has run the country for 18 years' positioning:
We care too, claims Hague
Key extracts from William Hague 's 1997 conference speech.

Meta’s decision to ban ads about politics, elections, and social issues on their platforms like Facebook and Instagram in the EU is now implemented.

This is the new policy. Any ad about fx elections, civil rights, economy, health, climate, immigration, or foreign policy is now (presumably) banned.

I know statistics are poorly understood and are misused. But facts matter

Between the 1991, 2001, 2011 and 2021 Census *every* ethnic group in the UK has become *less* geographically segregated and *all* groups, majority and minorities, are more likely to interact with people not like them

Yes, she comes close, but on policy some of it is still in the making as you say, while it's pretty clear where Jenrick would end up, to the right of Badenoch, wherever that will be. Let's see if she will be there long enough to announce any policy based on these reviews.
florianfoos.bsky.social
So if you think you've seen full-on accommodation of the radical right yet, more is still to come.
florianfoos.bsky.social
It's sufficiently clear by now that if Badenoch is the most rightwing leader the Tories ever had, Jenrick's Conservative Party would be indistinguishable on second dimension politics from Reform.
florianfoos.bsky.social
He also just isn't very funny, no matter how hard he tries.
florianfoos.bsky.social
This Jenrick speech could have been given as is at the Reform conference a couple of weeks ago. One of the most striking parts, for a Shadow Justice secretary, are the parts on Northern Ireland. Incredible how far the Tories have moved away from John Major's legacy.

Is this not how you do lunch with your PhD students @drjennings.bsky.social ?
florianfoos.bsky.social
You need to be eligible for ESRC funding to qualify for this studentship. Please contact me if you have questions. Deadline for applications is 10 December. Please help spread the word.

There is the feeling you take away from it that Merkel thinks she could have prevented the full scale invasion if East European states would have followed her ideas and if she has still been in power to chat to Putin.
florianfoos.bsky.social
And this is not even the most controversial passage from the interview she gave Hungarian opposition medium partizan. If the translation is right she blamed Russia‘s full scale invasion on Covid cause it radicalized Putin (sth to that) and prevented face-to-face diplomacy between world leaders (🙄).
joniaskola.bsky.social
Merkel is probably one of the people most responsible for the war, as she was one of Putin’s main appeasers. Her leadership was a massive failure

On domestic politics, I liked how Merz actually engaged with questions and explained coalition bargaining, deal making and compromise. The questioning on those topics was also much more robust.
florianfoos.bsky.social
There are other lines on that topic ("there are still around 1 million people [in Gaza] ... there used to be 2 million"), where I'm just perplexed how a serious journalist can let this go without a basic follow-up.
