Who coined "Metroidvania"? It wasn't @jparish.bsky.social, and he'll be the first to tell you. Besides, there are far more interesting questions, like: How did it spread? Evolve? And what's it got to do with rickrolling?

Watch til the end for a post-credits sting.

I know it's been said before but no matter how rational I want to be, in my heart I still do believe killing mr peanut and bringing him back as a baby unlocked some kind of wretched demonic seal on human society

Fantastic piece.

Strongly recommend reading this.

It tackles the most prevalent form of Liberal Zionism that still pervades much discourse even as people claim to disavow it.

Liberation Is Not Integration: On liberal Zionism, one-state fantasies, and what Palestinians actually want
The left’s view of Palestine’s future often reduces to vague terms like “one-state solution” or “equal rights for all” but few address the tough questions they raise, especially: how can Palestinians ...

When I was writing my book on Oshii in the early 2000s, an expensive DVD set was the best way to see this.

Over 20 years later… it’s still just that DVD set.

Why didn’t I write about this series in my book? 1. I wanted to focus on titles for an English speaking audience and 2. I couldn’t afford it
Gosenzo-sama Banbanzai!

I lucked into this, and only realized it was Mamoru Oshii after that fact. Hilarious, wildly inventive, and has a line style and shorthand that's just breathtaking. I desperately need a remastered bluray to exist and be in my home

Speaking as the world’s greatest comics critic, IMO it’s time some of you stepped up to try and knock me off my throne

The thing about comics criticism is that most places don't actually pay for your contributions. For a lot of us, we purely do it for the love of writing. Tiffany doing this over the last couple years is huge for people who want to write while everything gets more and more expensive

Confirmed: The "call center" ICE is planning to open in the Nashville area isn't *just* a call center.

According to new DHS documents, the ICE 287(g) National Coordination Center will host, among other things, the dispatch center for a transportation network of private armed guards. 🧵

there's a certain way certain people write fiction about disability that really sets my teeth on edge, and it's an approach that I can only describe as 'educational hugboxing'

in this, portrayal of disability must be constantly affirming, and it must use specific and correct terminology

Super rad thread

I feel like I’ve always viewed the story of the Nativity—even as a kid—as a deeply resonant story of people in a very less-than-ideal situation nevertheless somehow making do, owing in significant part to the compassion of others
I am not a Christian of course but like all Americans I have spent my life marinating in Christian mythography, and so around this time of year I have a lot of thoughts about the Nativity and the part where the innkeeper says there's no room in the inn.
