They could be a multitude of creatures and they would either be any of those different animals at different times or they would be a hybrid of multiple animals, which to me is so much more fascinating than only a vampire bat

They just seem like a nice take on the idea of a vampire. They also weren't entirely locked into being SPECIFICALLY a vampire BAT
