It made me think about which species were likely to settle based on their life-history and dispersal patterns. Are these communities primarily composed of species with long-distance dispersal due to substrate shape & isolation? (4/4) #MarineLife 🦑🌊

(2) The pilings acted like replicate reef systems, separated by sand, each with its own assembled community and zonation patterns. I was especially interested to see large owl limpets - likely many years old - living there. Further out, I could see kelps, but I couldn’t get to them. (3/x)

We went down to the San Clemente pier a few days ago to collect mussels & barnacles for experiments. Because virtually all natural hard substrate in Orange County is protected, when possible, we get critters from “built” habitats. I noticed a couple of cool things there. (1/x) #MarineLife 🌊🦑
