“We've seen a force that would shatter our nation, rather than share it.
Would destroy our country if it meant delaying democracy.
And this effort very nearly succeeded.
But while democracy can be periodically delayed, it can never be permanently defeated.” -A. Gorman

Just finished The Testing for my students’ book clubs! It is a good mix of The Hunger Games, The Maze Runner, and Divergent. It reminded me of something I would’ve been reading around the 2010s. Excited to talk to students about it!

The anniversary of #January6 has me thinking of Parable of the Talents. A lot of Butler’s writing seem more relevant than ever these days. The parallels between Trump’s rhetoric and the Christian-nationalist president in the novel is uncanny and terrifying.

I also enjoyed The Kite Runner. I started this book since I’ve seen it repeatedly in AP Lit teacher groups. Although Kite Runner is far from a “relaxing read,” (I cried several times), I found its themes of guilt, belonging, change, and obligation extremely powerful.

Favorite read of 2024

The Covenant of Water: beautifully written, heartbreaking yet healing. I went in without much knowledge of Indian culture/history and Verghese weaves so much of it throughout the story. Very relaxing read that I finished during winter weather in early 2024.

First book of 2025 ✅

Although fantasy is not normally my jam, I enjoyed this dark, political corruption of Oz.

What I found most interesting is the depiction of gender. The book opens w/ the rumors surrounding Elphaba’s gender, and the major focus is on women characters #BookSky #Wicked
