Expectations went up when he won the B1G ahead of schedule in year three. I have been something of a Franklin defender because "can't win the big one" is often an ephemeral tag but this year has made it hard to go to bat for him.

Paterno had the only two national titles in program history plus four more unbeaten seasons. He had banked an enormous amount of goodwill that allowed him to survive the post-1999 fall. Franklin has one Big Ten title from a season where he lost to Pitt and got blown out by Michigan.

Yeah, I think the 4-21 record against top ten teams - not to mention the fact that they are likely to miss the playoff in a peak roster year that was supposed to match what their two measuring stick programs did in the last two seasons - is the relevant factor here.

This was Lloyd Carr’s biggest problem. Good recruiter, good at motivating players, good at player development, and capped his upside with a George McClellan-esque tendency to overestimate the opponent and coach scared, especially with a lead.
