tbqh, my support for platner has a lot less to do with him and a lot more to do with him being a strong alternative to her. i think thats the case for a lot of (especially) younger people involved in dem politics here

as a trans woman in maine i can't express how much i appreciate that she did this and stood up for us. especially back in feb before opposition had really started. proud of my vote for her!

but i also think people less familiar with her over index it in their mental image of her

i think that kind of underplays the significant extent to which the russian republic itself was heavily responsible for the break up of the union. certainly nationalists such as putin disliked it insofar as it was the end of a russian centered empire, but it doesnt play out like it does w/o yeltsin

thats kind of what i mean by "conservative" lol. like if your aim is to retain the union, gorbachev's personal idealism, and unwillingness to use any kind of force gets in the way.

this is getting a bit into counterfactuals, and so not necessarily useful for making the point, but i don't think its especially unreasonable to conclude the soviet union could have transformed into something similar to what you guys are describing if gorbachev had been slightly more conservative

idk very much about california bq polling, but at least over here the rule of thumb is the yes % is a ceiling that will go down, and undecideds all vote no, so maybe thats part of it? like if i saw something that was like 54% yes at the start of bq id be like ok we're fucked

there is a 200 post thread on the dsa forums where yeah the main rationale is that it would be unfair to republicans

i am not lol what are you talking about. cali dsa endorsed prop 50 all of the shit you can find in favor by googling is from those people. but the national org is opposed to that and for example, is blocking VAN access for them. i was on dsa's npc until like 8 months ago i know what im talking about
