There was an interesting post on Reddit yesterday asking what DBA jobs are like these days. Here's a snippet of the most important part: Our friend works for maybe 15 hours a week, on call for maybe 40 but is always running around not in front of his computer. She works odd hours, takes the shifts like Saturdays and Friday nights…And the rest of the time she watches YouTube/does other things while on call.

It's official: SQL Server 2022 was the last release for SSRS. At SQLBits this week, Microsoft announced that SQL Server 2025 won't include SSRS. Instead, all SQL Server 2025 customers will get free licensing for the on-premises Power BI Report Server (PBIRS.) The same license key you use to install 2025 will also work to activate PBIRS. Microsoft's got links on how it'll work:

As a very small dev org (1 person), #Google has yet again raised their pricing for Workspace. I just don't use the features to justify the price. I'm simply using them to host e-mail & it isn't worth any longer to continue with them. Moving reCAPTCHA to hCAPTCHA & e-mail hosting is to follow.

My view this afternoon. Having some beverages and listening to the sound of the wind in the pines, tamaracks, and, birch trees. The occasional crow and woodpecker can be heard as well. A balmy 12 degrees Celsius.

This tells all. All North American markets down in the past 30 days. #TrumpRecession

#TrumpRecession. Let's call it for what it is, a self-imposed recession by a single douchebag (I was going to write person, but that is too nice for this fascist criminal). I'm fairly convinced he is doing this to short the markets.

How do you get new colors on the Commodore 64? Pedantically... you don't. Practically requires a deep dive into pallete switching, the behavior of CRTs, and the psychology of color itself. (The article demonstrates what works and what doesn't, so it comes with a strong strobing warning!)

Ugh, just got this #Windows11 full screen ad in #Windows10 today. Very annoying because I was actively using the keyboard and the default is "Learn More"...and spacebar was pressed... I don't want to learn more! Bad design, should be an option to opt-out.

I'm working with #AvaloniaUI .NET controls this morning... so far I'm impressed. I think for my new #programming project this is going to be the way to go over what I have been using for the past few years.

I've locked my X/Twitter account and removed the app from my phone. Unsolicited followers and SO many ads was driving me crazy with that platform. A better experience on Bluesky so far.

Ugh, let's just go with the standard that is already in place, globally, UTC, and be done with it. Trade is global anyway, and what does it matter if you "wake up" at 23:00 or 04:00. The market argument is weak in this article.

Ontarians will see their clocks turn back by an hour this Sunday, as they switch back to standard time until the spring — a change that seems to spark the same debate every November.
