Publicity photo from the good old days.

Nothing says "We're scary guys" like a little demon goat on his hind legs, a two-headed calf (one of which is wearing a crown) and a wolf who's clearly singing his heart out.

The critic who hated "Taxi Driver" the most had to be Tom Sullivan, who concluded his review with the most blistering insult possible for Martin Scorsese.

It's in the Esquire story below, but not pictured here.

A half-century later, that remark has backfired ...

At the Cannes Film Festival, the jury president broke with tradition by openly denouncing Scorsese's film.

Taxi Driver won the Palme d'Or anyway.

That jury president was Tennessee Williams, who provoked similar outrage throughout his entire writing career. Funny how things change.

Some critics championed it: The New Yorker's Pauline Kael, especially. But also Roger Ebert in the Chicago Sun-Times.

Vincent Canby in The New York Times bunted: he couldn't decide if it was good or bad.

Rex Reed, however .... 🫥

When Bovino was 11, two formative things happened:

His father killed a woman, plunging their family into despair and chaos.

Then he saw a Jack Nicholson movie that he says made him want to join the border patrol—even though he hated the film.

Gregory Bovino has been dismissed in disgrace, but history will not forget the Border Patrol commander.

He marched smugly through Minneapolis as ICE ran roughshod over the city in reckless pursuit of the undocumented, killing two protesters and terrorizing a nation.

How did he get this way?

No … no no.

This is too heartbreaking. Catherine O’Hara is too brilliant to lose.

This really hurts.

Anyway, protect Paul Giamatti at all costs.

And … some interesting tea is spilled about Rhino 🦏

“The fire hose was on full blast. That was a tricky, strange job, I will tell you that. It was a very odd job, that one.”

A first look at #TheBluff: The Brutal Pirate Film That Goes for a Hard-R Rating.

Priyanka Chopra Jonas and Karl Urban lash out at each other in the high-seas revenge tale, produced by the Russo brothers.

I usually wake up first in our house, so this has been my little morning ritual.

The #StrangerThings finale did not miss.

I love hearing this! You'd think kids would hate it, but it sounds like it actually enhanced the hype.

At the end of this, one of the toy stores actually rejected the whole idea...

Thanks for indulging my sales pitch.

If you decide to give this Early Bird idea to someone, I hope they truly love the book when it comes out this spring.

May the Force be with you — and happy holidays to all.🎁

This is my son holding a prototype at Comic-Con💥

I think the Vader book is an especially good gift for dads, because it's full of fatherhood stories.

The personal histories of George Lucas, David Prowse, James Earl Jones, Lawrence Kasdan, Hayden Christensen and others deeply shaped the character.

Here's the Vader Book Certificate.

Save it and print it. Put it in a card. Christmas is covered for the #StarWars fans in your life.

Okay, here's a last-minute Christmas gift idea. 🎄🎁

It's as easy as printing out a sheet of paper.

#StarWars fans will LOVE this book *when it comes out in April. Here's a chance to give it a little early AND call back to an odd bit of galactic holiday history:

The most interesting thing I learned:

The way the Duffer Brothers played when they were kids shaped everything about #StrangerThings. They would set up their toys and make "movies"—with no camera.

But they had a sense that movies were two hours long, so their story had to hit certain beats.

CHAPTER FIVE:

ALL TOGETHER NOW

The final script was presented to the cast for a table read on Sept. 8, 2024.

There was coffee—and contemplation. ☕ Also, frazzled nerves. Hugs. Doughnuts. “It was hard not to feel just a lot of gratitude,” Natalie Dyer recalls. “A mix of appreciation and anxiety."

CHAPTER FOUR:

THE THIRD TWIN

Shawn Levy, director of the Night at the Museum movies and Deadpool & Wolverine, is credited as an executive producer on #StrangerThings, but he described his role over the course of the show as “a professional big brother.”

“I’m like the triplet they don’t want.”

CHAPTER THREE:

EVERYTHING MUST GO

“When I hear people talk about what they care about in the final season, it’s not even necessarily ‘What’s going to happen?’ It’s ‘Are my favorite characters going to be okay?’”

— Joanna Robinson, the House of R podcast.

CHAPTER TWO:

ESCAPE TO FROGTOWN

"Every time we finished ten pages, we would hand ’em off. Not to Netflix—they actually didn’t know what we were doing.”

The brothers pause to share a laugh. “I didn’t want notes at that point...”

CHAPTER ONE:

THE VANISHING OF THE DUFFER BROTHERS

"We had known what the final scene was for a while,” says Matt, the brasher and more talkative of the two. “But in terms of the finer details, that took a long time to figure out.”
