Adventures with public sculpture, or, I’m pretty sure that’s not supposed to be leaning like that…

It’s impossible not to think about the construction of spaces, and how we read them. These are flat stretched canvases and yet the paintings tease and hide their making.

Nathlie Provosty in ‘Threshold Speech’ at Bortolami Gallery. I really enjoyed the play between concrete planes of color and trompeloeil effects that tilt and shift the surfaces to jagged effect, especially at this monumental scale.

Detail of ‘The Auction’, proper left edge, with mounds of paint scraped onto the side of the canvas stretcher, presumably showing the leftover paint that went into making the #painting.

Nicole Eisenman has a great #painting show at 52 Walker Street showing possibilities between representation & the invention of images & meaning through material & scale. These connect to the lineage of grand history & religious paintings while subverting what is a patriarchal form.

My favorite Judy Pfaff in her amazing show of twisting, turning, & unfurling assemblages at Cristin Tierney gallery.

New James Siena at Miles McEnery.

Right now I’m thinking a lot about black & white, so this caught my eye, but there’s an intriguing sense of color through the whole show, and the work on canvas results in diaphanous light emanating past an irregular network.

Individual Joan Mitchell drawings…

A great suite of Joan Mitchell drawings as a part of ‘To Define a Feeling, Joan Mitchell 1960 - 1965’ at David Zwirner gallery. I love the use of heavy black charcoal to build a sense of shifting masses out of raw gesture.

#JoanMitchell at David Zwirner Gallery. I love me a triptych. Especially one that plays with subtle shifts in movement and mass across the panels that ultimately affects the viewer’s sense of time in the #painting.

Great #JoanMitchell #painting show at @davidzwirner. These two ( at the beginning and end of the show) break out of a predominantly forest nocturne pallet of deep blues and greens with flashes of color that explode off her gestures.

From completed #painting to work in process. Not completely back to the drawing board, but fixing things that have bothered me as it sits around the studio and gets looked at more and more; it’s still not quite done.

I always enjoy the subtle eccentricities of Richard Rezak’s #sculpture; here are 2 small works exhibited as a part of Luhring Augustine’s “Sliced Tropics & Cosmic Dancers”

“Running Arcs (For John Cage)” at @gagosian is somewhat the expected experience from a #RichardSerra, but it he experience with the #sculpture is still amazing.

Against Serra’s expressed wishes, the attached pics are in color.

Printer’s #Drawing, redrawn. My process when working in a series is to revisit themes and formal structures that generated earlier drawings.

Very pleased to have been a part of the #SeeStopRun publication of Christopher Wool’s sprawling downtown exhibition. This is a great publication that really captures a sense of the show.

Really liked the #CadyNoland framed works that didn’t seem like reprintings or fragments of previous works on aluminum, but then maybe I just didn’t identify the sources for these…

They do have a Christopher Wool vibe that I really like.
