For The Nation, I wrote about Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth's time on an advisory board for an Israeli crypto company and the cash payout he might be eligible for this week.

If you'd like to delight in a side-by-side comparison, here's Bari Weiss' reported note to CBS staffers (left) and the one I cooked up on ChatGPT with a quickly dashed-off prompt (right). Looking forward to hearing from you in the days and weeks ahead!

New CBS polling shows that voters have soured on Trump's handling of economic issues.

60% of voters now disapprove of his overall handling of the economy.

On inflation it's even worse for Trump, with 65% disapproving.

someone investigate: does an athlete ever really "lose sleep" over a major mistake they make in a game? is that a real thing?

Sadly, the reigning epistemology of journalism only acknowledges "true" or "real" (and thus speakable) motive when it is explicitly stated by the speaker. It can in no way, shape, or form be attributed via logic, history, or pattern. This bans news from naming anything one would like to hide.

OpenAI employees are very excited about how well their new AI tool can create fake videos of people doing crimes and have definitely thought through all the implications of this

We laugh at this shit -- I mean, how can you not? -- but it's serious: these guys want to infuse reactionary thinking into AI and then infuse AI into every nook & cranny of American life. They can't win the argument so they are trying to blunt-force their views onto us with money & power.

if i were a would-be dictator whose only civilian check on power had been consumed by total-complete partisan loyalty, something i would definitely do is call an unprecedented in-person meeting of the only people who could stop me and then proceed to illustrate why they should stop me

Chuck Schumer, in an hour from now: The president plans to flood the streets with military personnel to oppress innocent people, but what he should be flooding the streets with is tax credits for the middle class!

President Trump was met by silence as he began his Quantico address, a contrast from the rousing applause he expects at his speeches.

“I’ve never walked into a room so silent before,” Trump said. “If you want to applaud, you applaud.” wapo.st/4gSqzmS

I don’t like some of the ships you’re doing, aesthetically. I don’t like the mizzenmasts. I said to the Lord Admiral — this was back in 1809 — I said, look, I understand the engineering, but you reef the topsail off the mainmast and you’re fine. You’re fine. Napoleon was very overrated, nautically

Pritzker: "In any other country, if federal agents fired upon journalists & protesters when unprovoked what would we call it? If officials marched down streets harassing civilians & demanding their papers, what would we say? I don't think we'd have trouble calling it what it is: authoritarianism"

do me a favor. take two minutes (or less!) out of your scrolling time to tell a writer whose work you love how you feel. trust me, it's something a writer wants to hear. and not something you should wait to share. just pick a person whose work you read. tell them how they've touched you
