And it wasn’t even a smart, deniable fraud: it was just looking straight into cameras and lying like fuck, just brazenly bullshitting audience after audience. And it appears most of the lobby hacks were very well aware it was fraudulent bullshit at the time, and kept that knowledge to themselves.

Their strategy here is “Win over elderly reactionaries or bust”, and it’s helpful to understand that for them, “bust” means “very well-remunerated post-politics job with corporate donor” or at worst, “period in opposition, then try again with exactly the same shit”.
