Earthling. Hoping there's still time to save the planet for our young people. Kindness must prevail.
I was pondering if that was a typo and if so what else it might be. A benign 'invasion' as in The Day The Earth Stood Still (Michael Rennie version) might not go amiss. The remake was much, much bleaker; fates worse than death!

Indeed. I see myself as an Earthling first and foremost. Any further distinction should be minor detail.

Newsnight offering no respite. Claire Fox!!!

It's a bit of a dim and distant memory, but I think we did eat there once or twice if its the one near the junction with H M Rd? We'd usually stop off in Rusholme driving home from work.

The Hale/Bowden side?

The Amazons of Minneapolis?

So I understand. We rented a 1 Bed flat in one of the Victorian villas fronting Heaton Moor Road. Seemed very reasonable at the time, but I hate to think how much the rent would be now.
January 28, 2026 at 8:31 PM
Used to drive through on route to the then up and coming suburb of Heaton Moor (1992). When the only restaurants worth visiting were the curry houses in Rusholme and Est Est Est in Didsbury.

Saw that. IDS reeled of a list of the issues he saw in China. Wilfully or not realising that most now apply to the USA too!

Kowtowing getting used a lot today. Taking their cue from Badenoch earlier today.

If not the midterms, they are going to cheat in 2028 Only question is if they record that he got 92.5% of the vote. He sees what Putin does so will surely insist.

Deporting all those folk ain't going to help!
January 28, 2026 at 3:53 PM
Absolutely and many LA's have been exploring diversification to include civic functions and residential intensification to drive footfall and provide a resident customer base. I would also add that immigrant populations often add dynamism to this process setting up restaurants and grocery shops.
January 28, 2026 at 3:53 PM
I take your good point about civic pride, but the reality was that it wouldn't have 'sold' for conversion to alternative use without an enormous dowry and a massively controversial planning consent. They had no choice.
January 28, 2026 at 3:44 PM
I looked at the Full Fact tracker. Are you saying they are not accurately reporting what's happened/happening?
January 28, 2026 at 1:31 PM
Sorry if it wasn't clear, but I wasn't referring to that period.

Significant elements of the election manifesto already delivered with decent progress on substantial parts of the remainder. Don't hear about it? Well that's substantively down to the right wing media and their addiction to the chaos and dramas of the Tories. Change of leader just feeds that.
January 28, 2026 at 12:57 PM
Yes, the one the Tories had such success with!?! It was the endless succession of ministers and PM's with the subsequent policy void that eventually saw them off.

Is Maine still suffering consequences from the Canadian boycott?
January 27, 2026 at 7:40 PM
My take from this is that smart, discerning Americans are to be abandoned in favour of dumb, shit-sponge Americans. Presumably the latter are seen as easier to access and please. Truly aspirational.

Could this land them a Schengen-wide ban? No more holidays in Benidorm for a while.
January 27, 2026 at 5:27 PM
Where's the water coming from? And good luck to anyone living in glass towers as climate breakdown accelerates extreme heat in the region. No one with any sort of moral compass should go near this, but I can't see this being investable in any event.
January 27, 2026 at 2:49 PM
You have to set out what you see as the pressing issues, e.g. NHS , what you are going to do to address them and by when. If not, it's just trust us to do the right thing as we bumble along. Clearly, events happen, but the u-turn thing is really a media concoction to spice up the commentary.
January 27, 2026 at 1:32 PM
Let's not forget there's a manifesto floating around in the mix. Policies count as much as personalities. Frankly policies should be the only thing that counts, but that would be too boring for the media circus.

Service charges or communal charges are inevitable in multi-occupied buildings regardless of tenure. The challenge is to have then administered fairly and transparently at a reasonable cost.
