It was never just about schools, it was never just about libraries, and it isn't actually about the books.

It's about finding a way to banish entire people, entire ideas, out of society, back into the closet or worse.

Texas bill could punish bookstores for 'obscene' books
A new bill in the Texas Legislature, authored by Rep. Nate Schatzline, would allow businesses to be held liable if a minor reports damages from "obscene" books.

Feels like Covid when it comes to money where I’m like: do I spend a little and enjoy our last few enjoyable years or do I save everything I have to buy us all entry into a different country we will need to flee to?

This was such a satisfying project, and one in which I realized for the first time how much my whole life had been spent in a manscape, in places where almost everything was named after men.
#WomensHistoryMonth: The City of Women Map is a fascinating visualization of women’s history and urban transportation. Created by Molly Roy, Rebecca Solnit, and Joshua Jelly-Schapiro, the map renames subway stops after notable women with links to that area, offering an entirely new way to view #NYC.

I haven’t spoken to my high school bestie in years for a number of complicated reasons, but to this day I still say “Soothing” every time I take a bite of a lettuce wrap, because that was our gag and when we were young she was the brightest star in my sky.

Sorry, I’m not going to keep harping on about this but why are initiation fees to join the Writers Assistant Union only a couple hundred bucks less than fees to join the WGA when I am making a tiny fraction of what my colleagues in the guild are making? Okay thank you.

I’ve barely taken any photos here but I did spot this from the backyard the other night.

Not to brag but it’s raining in L.A, work was called off last minute, and someone else cancelled tonight’s social plans. And I even got the table by the fire at Tartine.

Just experienced my first LA earthquake. I was on the toilet.

"The warehouse will cost $17.5 million for 90 days...the equivalent of 1 year's rent in a 1br apartment for ~1,200 people, or 80% of the city's unhoused."
When one unhoused man said he didn't want to go to the warehouse, officers told him: “It’s either that or jail.”

He offered to move. They said, “No, you can come with us or we’ll cuff you and throw you in jail.”

So am I crazy or has the font on absolutely everything — WhatsApp, Reddit, Google docs— recently changed?

Anyway I saw The Brutalist and it was so beautiful I kind of want to see it again. On the other hand I was in that theater for over four hours and I felt every one of those hours keenly.

Saw my first movie in L.A. last night at AMC City Walk and I feel like someone should have warned me about seeing a movie at AMC City Walk.

I was really excited about getting a union job. Unfortunately the rate the union negotiated is really not enough to live off of in LA if you don’t have a spouse who also works (I’m single) AND I have to pay over $2k in fees to join. I’m still hugely in favor of unions but there’s more work to do.

I’ve had two days off in L.A. and been to two bookstores - skylight books in Los Feliz and Book Soup in (Hollywood I think?) Both were fantastic.

I started a job this week in a real
writers room in LA. This has been a dream of mine for a long time but I never thought I’d really be able to do it, mainly because I didn’t even live in LA. Now I’m staying in West Hollywood. I still can’t believe this is real life.

This is why feminism is never a side issue, never a distraction. This is why dismantling toxic masculinity & the structures that feed & recreate it is *vital* for democracy, justice, & the survival of the planet.
Just a little reminder that the South Korean president who just declared martial law was elected two years ago on a wave of anti-feminist backlash. Misogyny is routinely part of the authoritarian package.

After Trump was elected, I started to wonder what could the grassroots, cities, and states do to move the needle on climate change without federal support. It turns out, a lot (gift link)

Federal progress on climate may stall, but city halls and statehouses are in a good position to build on recent gains.

Two weeks post election now, it’s time for me to stop mainlining Gilmore Girls & put together my list of classic films to watch in the winter.

Just so you know, you can ask to skip the photo at the TSA checkpoint & it’s no big deal & I think you should because it’s facial recognition technology and eff that noise.

I haven’t had a cold in two years but I have one now so I’m allowing myself to watch Gilmore Girls in bed with my coffee
